Don't use them - if you've got a sufficiently heavy chain it acts as a really good shock-absorbing catenary.
I know that a similar thread on another board contained the recommendation to carry more chain in high-yield form (ie takes the same load for a smaller section) - you then lose out in the shock-absorbent qualities - some reckon this can be provided by a nylon rode.
In both the latter cases I believe using a chum in conjunction has some advantages to offer.
I have on occasion (off Ré) tied a rubber snubber on some nylon line in a bight of chain to cut down the snatching - that was to get some shut-eye after I'd been thrown off the bunk for the second time.
