Having been bumming around the area for the last 3 years and around the forum for a while. was curious to know why its never mentioned in posts or never seen anyone post thats based there.

I have never sailed there and having been there while searching for a boat, it happened to be at low water and when its low its very low. so whats the SP on the place??

Most of the people there seem very happy with the place but the sill does make for restrictions. When I had a chum there, he was forever getting up in the middle of the night to get out into the river and then anchor up.

The bar's ok and food ok and the swimming pool is supposed to be excellent.

It has its charm and always seems to be full.

V nice marina - friendly folk, swimming pool (!) good clubhouse and food but

1. Massively tidal - OK if you draw next to nothing but for many boats it's a once a day opportunity to enter or leave

2. v tight once you're in - not much manoeuvring room.

Been once - May 2006 I think for a club meet and dinner! As Marmalade said good food but limited access and space once inside. Didn't use the swimming pool as the bar was open and had a greater attraction!

Seem to recall one of the more elderly members present struggled with the steepness of the pontoon access - but that may have been after being in the bar all afternoon!

We like it, a lot.
Went there again in 2008 for a Moody rally. Good atmosphere, very noticeable how amicable the berth-holders are.......generally a very 'family-friendly' environment.
Would be high on our list for a permanent berth if we lived that way.

Tidal restriction is the mian problem, for both the marina and saltings. The saltings are truly gorgeous, however on a high tide your feet will get very wet as the walkways get covered.

Hi

I am based at Tollesbury on the saltings and love it. Its cheap, friendly and safe. True it is very tidal, but the positive side of that is the boat is safe on the mud for a large part of the day.

Tollesbury Sailing Club (not in the marina) will always give a warm welcome to visitors.

Regards

Ian

I have been there several times & the welcome & food has been excellent.Endorse what others say about tidal gate. Most of the pontoons have the dreaded hoops instead of cleats from memory,& some look a bit rickety. They have a good boat fair. The Saltings are like going back in time.At high water springs the main road can flood but there is a back entrance to the Marina.

There's nothing wrong with Tollesbury - it's a decent place and I know several people with boats there. It was one of the first marinas and doesn't have all the convenience of some newer ones. I remember seeing it newly built in about 1971 when the whole area was just bare earth and that was really bleak, but if you don't like mud and working the tides there's not much point in sailing on the East Coast.

For me the problem is the £235 per metre charge with only 2 hours either side access. I would rather pay an extra £6.50 p/m (£50 a year) and have all tides at Essex marina.

Nice place to visit, especially if you have a family. Food and bar excellent, and there is a pool, and tennis courts, and lovely walks if that is your fancy.

Staff friendly and helpful.

Several members from our Club often go there with their children.

Great for a holiday visit couple of days on boat - as others have said Swimming Pool and nice club always seem to get good bar staff.

Would only be good as a permanent moorer if you dont go out much?

Have thought about it as a good place to base the boat for a summer as a floating cottage as we have kids.

Driving to it is a bit of a pain as its out in the wilds a bit.
