Have you got fuel at the injectors? If so, do they have a nice fine spray? If not try bleeding. Start with the basics & work thro' logically eliminating possible causes as you go.

Testing glowplugs is easy, if a parallel system. They tend to go around the same time, and would account for the symptoms.

Did it start OK before, after it was warmed up?

A word of warning

"If so, do they have a nice fine spray"

If anybody decides to check the spray pattern on the injectors....... please make sure that they do not put any part of their body in line with the spray pattern. Diesel injection from the injectors is at high pressure and can penetrate the skin.

Second that warning, we had a foolish aircraft technician in Germany who went looking for a hydraulic leak on a Canberra with his hand - he found it /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Hand blew up considerably and he ended up losing 2 fingers. Very stupid and he should have known better as he was fairly senior.

You dont have heater plugs. You have a Thermostart (not to be confused with a Thermostat!) This uses diesel fuel to send a flame into the inlet manifold. It may be fed from a little tin reservoir which needs topping up manually or on later engines from a reservoir that automatically tops itself up from the return to the tank or on the last engines a direct feed from one of the outlets on the fuel filter. If there is no diesel and the weather is cold that will be your problem if the thermostart is working. Test it by using the engine pre-heat and see if it gets hot.

Sounds like the symptoms my engine had at the start of the season. I had been fiddling though and changed the fuel filter. I bled the system down and the engine started & ran fine. But a few days later when it went back in the water, it took quite a bit of cranking to get it going. I just cracked off the injectors one by one while the engine was running. Now it's fine & starts quickly as it used to. So, I assume I hadn't quite got all the air out.

I had another problem a few year ago at the start of the season just after buying the boat. It ran fine the first day & used the boat. On the way back I filled the talk that had been left 1/3 full over the winter by the previous owner. You guessed it, the next weekend, it wouldn't start & had water in the fuel. There must have been condensation in the talk that was washed to the bottom.
