That's it! Many thanks. Dredging from the shipping channel and dumping alongside via a pipe supported on pontoons. This photo from https://www.mvn.usace.army.mil/Miss...and-Stabilization-Program/Dikes-and-Dredging/ . Mississippi's gold dust was an interesting read too.
