What's so special about a Blue Ensign.........

Re: What\'s so special about a Blue Ensign.........

Don't know where I could buy trainers that my fashion concious kids would wear for £25 do you?

That's what membership of my undefaced blue ensign club costs.

When I take into account the savings on free / cheap moorings around the world, and in the Solent that I thus gain access to, I am probably a couple of thousand pounds a year better off. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Oh and the discounted chandlery, insurance and surveyors, use of club charter boats, cheap bar b q's, etc; etc;

Thanks, Talbot, for the acknowledgement. As a Gunner it grieved me terribly to have to support the REYC but there we are.......

Lizzie, my membership is only 15 quid p.a. but I have yet to realise any of the benefits you mention - how do you do it!?

Re: What\'s so special about a Blue Ensign.........

Dont forget the network of people around the world prepared to provide assistance and welcome to fellow club members.

Twisterowner, we had two Twisters. 'La Ina' and 'Kavirondo'. Lovely boats.

Re: What\'s so special about a Blue Ensign.........

From Cuxhaven eastwards we are constantly questioned about ensigns worn by British boats. It's considered wierd that we don't fly the national flag.
Up near Stockholm we were stopped by the coat watch as they thought we were Polish. The Blue ensign is inevitably thought to be Australian or New Zealand.
I give the 5 minute explanation, I here other Brits giving the 5 minute explanation. And it gets even worse when I talk about the White ensign.
The British Ensign system, in short, is a lousy means of identification because it causes so much confusion.

Re: What\'s so special about a Blue Ensign.........

I am a C.A. member with a Part 1(?) Registration, but I only fly the Red Ensign for precisely the reason that I want to be recognised as a British ship, not a member of a Yacht Club or Association. I fly the burgees of my Yacht Club or the C.A. as appropriate to signify that. I personally think it was very bad PR for the C.A. to advertise at the SBS that you could "get" a blue ensign by just joining. Very Non U I should say! What would the RYS think? Tut tut, how very grave!
