What\'s Sanda like ?

I am thinking of visiting Sanda next year.
Can anyone advise on recent status of moorings and ease of safe anchoring overnight ?

Re: What\'s Sanda like ?

Sanda is a beautiful wee island, well worth a visit, with some v.g. walking and a pub. The holding is good - mostly clean sand. The website says it's a safe anchorage but fails to warn that it's uncomfortable/untenable in strong west or northwest winds. North easterlies can also be a problem. Last time I visited there was one mooring for hire.

Nice Island - with apparently a nice pub !

When we called in in the summer it was blowing a NE 6+ - so didn't feel like leaving the boat at anchor - there is some shelter from the NE - and holding was good - but that lee shore looks mighty close ....

Also one you want to get the tides right for through the sound - we were just waiting for the tide round the mull - a trip ashore will have to wait for another time

Well worth a visit. I called in last year waiting for a shot across to Ireland and enjoyed it so much called in for another night on the way back.
As already mentioned, there is one mooring but there are doubts about how often it is serviced. The holding is so good it is not worth the anxiety of using an unknown mooring's ground tackle and its novel standing on the bow watching the anchor set in gin clear water.

The bay is sheltered from the prevailing SWlys but anything with a North or East in it can make for a bouncy night. The pub is good with real ale and good grub... especially as the resident population numbers the owner and a couple of hired hands. Don't miss out on the free-range egg omlettes. The chooks run around eating sand-hoppers from the seaweed on the shore. There are self catering cottages and a bunkroom with a shower available for yottie use.
It is well worth taking a walk across the the South side of the island to see the spectacular lighthouse and the wreck of the Byron Darnton, a WW2 liberty ship, or what is left of her.
To be recommended.

I agree with the comments above. I stopped there under anchor for a mid morning coffee this summer, after leaving Campbeltown and waiting for the tide to build around the Mull. Wish I had stayed longer. Holding was fine.

sailed right past last weekend rounding the Mull, having no time to stop, but in other years, its been great. Good anchorage (except as mentioned above), good food, interesting place. Well worth a visit.
Was for sale recently. Did it sell?
