What\'s in a name?

Next obstacle on my list towards getting the new boat...... choosing a Port of Registry.

I've got the full list of the ports but just wondered if there any rules governing which you should use, like the nearest to our home berth or whatever.
I can't find any regulations but maybe someone knows better?

Portsmouth would be the closest - no offence to Pompey but it isn't the most glamorous name to stick on the transom is it......?

Thanks,
Matt

you can choose any of them, no restrictions.

I must say you do look a bit of a twat if you choose Hull, unles the name is "Back of" or "Blunt End of" or "The most Crap Town in the UK is".

LOL !!!

Or you could call it "Yes, I know I need to clean the..." or "Heaven and ..." or "I'm never going to..."

I noticed one of the ports is Goole - where the hell is that?

Navigation? I just thought you had to "point and go", if you can see water it must be OK right ?????

"Oop Narth" sounds like a long way away..... maybe even further north than the M4. Scarey. Not sure I want to venture there on my own........

Re: What\'s in a name?

When pottering about he Med last two years ,I am amazed how many boats had POOLE written on their backsides . As I come from this area and am a reasonably social creature i usually got in conversation with the occupants.l Not one of the boats ,and I must be talking of ten or so, actualy came from Poole.
Can anyone explain this ?

Re: What\'s in a name?

Probably coz Poole sounds better than where they really come from. Swindon or Milton Keynes doesn't quite look right on the back does it?

Re: What\'s in a name?

Be very careful, my previous boat was registered in London, and being moored stern to, sightseers were always asking "Wot part of London do you come from then mate".

<hr width=100% size=1>Sea water is for boating on, not swimming in.

Re: What\'s in a name?

Don't think you can register anywhere. There is a list of available ports. Milton Keynes isn't one of them!!!

You can call your boat "xxx of Milton Keynes" with your port of registration say portsmouth, then you would have on the back of your boat...
xxx of Milton Keynes - Portsmouth

All this is for part 1 not sure about SSR

Re: What\'s in a name?

Is Windermere classed as a port ? I think not. But lots of people have it under there name. Even seen "St Helens" on one. And yes it was meant to refer to the one with the Rugby team.

Re: What\'s in a name?

Because that's what the boat is called xxx of St Helens, St helens is part of the name not the port of registration.

Re: What\'s in a name?

Not correct ! in this case the way it is laid out it is most definetly not part of the name.

Re: What\'s in a name?

I am aware that it was just for fun. There was a hint of sarcasm in my post relating to the fact that people put all manner of things on there boat, be it a skull and crossed bones or in this case a port that does not exist.
Regards - Ian
