What\'s changed in 5 years?

Coming back to sailing after a leave of absence (not at HM's pleasure, but kids, new job etc meant something had to give) I'm wondering if much has changed and whether I need to swot up on stuff - I haven't been reading the magazines etc as it just frustrated me that I couldn't go sailing.

Obviously sailing itself is still the same (or I assume it is!), but what about regulations? Reading a post on here about submitting passage plans made me wonder what else I don't know about that's cropped up in the last five years...

Gosh, it used to be first and second fingers together. Thanks, otherwise could have been a major breach in etiquette.

Tom Cunliff reported in YM that electronic navigation was ready for prime-time use on yachts about 48 hours before some other bloke also called Tom Cunliff published a training course covering this subject.

Re: Lot\'s

Oilies are better. Fleece is everywhere. Boats a getting bigger and so are the bills. The march of the MOBO goes on. RIBS multiply like rabbits. Harbours around the Solent get full quicker. Diesel's getting dearer. Electronics are getting cheaper. More people sail through the winter. Weather forecast have grown in numbers but the qualities gone off.

The sea's still wet and salty. It's still a battle of wits with wind and tide and overdraught.

Some things haven\'t changed...

It's still about the last remaining unregulated freedom in our increasingly controlled society.
