Sailing from Guadeloupe to Marie Galant (Carribean) on a catamaran with a shoal of flying fish flying alongside us, and then disappearing back into the water, repeatedly.

Re: What\'s been your Greatest Sight in Sailing ?

1. Dawn, in almost any remote anchorage, after a peaceful night. The sound of the Radio 4 folk and sea song medley that precedes the first shipping forecasts drifts up through the hatch.

2. Battlecry sailing up the Medina under spinnaker, the luff just curling and uncurling.

3. A channel crossing, just before sunset, with a ghosting breeze. The sea reflecting a mixture of green and orange and purple highlights.

4. Alderney breakwater, after a crossing in fog.

5. A Swan Europeans race in the Channel islands. As the small boat in the big division we had started well and tacked well to get to the windward mark well up. The next leg was a white sail reach where the only thing that mattered was waterliine length. Slowly we were overtaken by 30 or so bigger Swans, each in concours condition. The sun was out, the sky was blue, there were no clouds to spoil the view...

Re: What\'s been your Greatest Sight in Sailing ?

A school of Dolphins catching up the boat and then playing around us.

Sunset, all is quiet just the swishing of the water across the hull.

Add the two together and it just humbles me as to why I love sailing.

Wish I was closer to the boat now.........

Re: What\'s been your Greatest Sight in Sailing ?

Sailing past the visitor moorings off Tiengemeten on the Haringvliet a couple of years ago. A yacht approached a mooring a few metres from us, with a spectacularly beautiful, topless young lady in the bow. She smiled and waved sweetly to me, then picked up the mooring.

Landfall ... Errrghhhh Cape Hatteras

It was single handing in the pre-GPS days with a plastic sextant that had laid in the sun for too long. The destination should have been Cape Charles to enter the Chesapeake by the tunnel bridge but...

Intercepted by the USCG for wearing a red duster "Where are you from?"

"Plymouth"

"Which Plymouth?"

"Plymouth, England"

"Aw shucks. Hope you haven't been on a farm in the last 24 hours. BTW, where's your entry visa?"

........

And then there was the time...

We anchored overnight in a creek on a Croatian island. In the morning a woman walked down to the beach, stripped naked and went for a swim. Around the boat. Backstroke.

My son referred to it as Nudey Cove. He was younger then.

Re: What\'s been your Greatest Sight in Sailing ?

Heading south, inside the outer Hebrides, and seeing dolphins heading north, then gradually realising the size of the school. As far as we could see (well over a mile) there were bodies breaking the water. A small group broke away to play round our bow for five minutes or so; I've still got the photographs showing more than thirty. And that was only a tiny part of the whole school!

Is that only because they aren't safe out of sight of land!

Re: What\'s been your Greatest Sight in Sailing ?

North Atlantic Tall Ships race ex Boston to Liverpool - on the helm of UK Tallship Soren Larsen and seeing Russian Barque Kruisenstern overhaul us to lewward with all sail set. At sunset with not another vessel on the horizon.

And Cape Horn 2 miles to starboard was quite good..

Re: What\'s been your Greatest Sight in Sailing ?

Something like this, you mean?

From the AC Jubilee Round the Isalnd Race. She sailed over our weather, about 20 yards upwind - we had full sail, and the engine flat out, and were makeing about 13 knots as she powered by.
