Had the boat out to do a few repairs, antifoul and service the outdrive. We got the marina to lift and chock the boat and do the outdrive service which was all well and good. We had a word with the staff about a faulty trim tab indicator after we had spent a day fitting a new ram and then taking it back off when this wasnt the fault, same with the indicator panel on the dash. We had narrowed the fault down to a chaffed wire.

So we decided to relaunch the boat and just leave the broken wire alone, after all the rams where still working fine, just the dash indicator panel was showing false readings.

We arrived at the boat on Friday evening to discover the marina have fitted a new ram and fixed the broken wire then relaunched the boat. At no point have we asked them to do this work.

We had a word with the service manager, who in all fairness did say they would lift the boat and remove the ram and refit the old one. This may however be a little counterproductive. He is going to get back to us this week when he has found out why the work has been carried out.

But where do we stand with this? The marina have carried out work we never asked to be carried out so who foots the bill?

Will just add to that that they had also left the boat filthy, there was muck all over the vinyl seating and the engine bay was disgusting. Items they had removed from the engine bay to do the work where not fastened down properly and the heaters where all turned off.

about the service work you didn'y ask for,
legally you could win the case, I guess,
but sometimes it is better to stay friends with the service company in the marina,

I would ask the boss, or the senior manager, bring him to the boat, and explain him politely what has happened, and then asc him what he would do if he was in your place, or asc him to come with a proposition,
Every serious businessman will come up with something.
and then if you're not happy you can alway's decide to go the hard way.

but about the trim flap problem,
are they bennets ? when yes,
Had exactly the same problem on mine,
was corrosion on the relay box connections, (the box that connects everything together, its close to the trim pump)
replacing the relay box and the bleu controll cable made it working fine again.

They are eltrim trim tabs.

We had a word with the service manager and he said he will see what he can do. We are happy that the problem has been fixed, we dont however want to be landed with a big bill for work we didnt ask to be done.

We are hopefully going to sort this out on good terms. We are happy in the marina and dont fancy having to go miles to get work carried out when the facilities are on the doorstep.

Can't but help agree with BartW, in cases like this tackling the top man (with a polite but firm approach), normally leads to dividends in obtaining a satisfactory resolution. Much yelling down phones or snooty notes / letters leads people to dig their heels in whether they are right or wrong (human nature at work!). Gentle persuasion tends to lead to a satisfactory result.

Not sure how I would react but on a positive note they are very efficient and I wouldnt wish to upset such a good company, the tabs are working now and that has to be worth something :).
Most jobs on a boat cant be priced up first because there are so many variables, you need a marine engineer you can trust and these seam quick !

I presume we are talking about trim tabs and I presume you are aware the tabs are cross wired.

The starboard button moves the port tab .
I presume you haven't been working on the wrong tab ?

Quite right peter, most jobs unless straightforward servicing is a matter of firstly viewing the boat then giving a quote that is firstly accepted by the owner.

Even on servicing other faults can be found, In my opinion its better to get on the phone straight away rather than either ignore it and report after you have packed up and gone, some jobs can be rectified easily and cut down travel costs, extra parking etc.

What I dont like is doing jobs on a quote, correctly, and being moaned at about the cost after.

However leaving cleints boats dirty and unorganised is not on, the engineers should have sorted out there careless mistakes in the first place.

Wait until you get the bill and if you then feel it unfair talk it over with them and try and reach an agreement,Simples :)

We where working on the correct ram yes!!!!

We agree, they have been very quick and very efficient and we really dont want to upset them as we have been happy with the service we recieved.

I suppose we shall just have to wait and see what price they come back with.
