Guys in the south looking good again. I hope this forecast changes because in about 24 hours from now the wind will back westerly and they will gybe straight to the line. ARGHHHHHHHHHH!!
I think where I am I'm going to have the wind right up my A%$e /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif
It's difficult to head south and loose places now /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I had a brief attempt to get South then realised it wasn't going to work. I realised (too late) that three factors help the southern pack.

The isobars are angled in their favour because everyone is constrained by them but the southerners can get further East.

The chart projection favours an approach from the South. The distances up from below Cape Town are significantly shorter than they look on the screen.

The wind direction approaching the Cape also currently favours a southern approach as you said.

And I though all the top sailors had made a mistake! /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Was just thinking the opposite, I have turned north early, looks like the weather has changed again. To approach CT from the south means a bigger hole to get through, running the cursor over the area for later gives higher wind speeds to the north.

Of course, only time will tell...

It all depends when the hole disappears...... /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
Like Dyflin says, Time will tell. Hopefully Dippers right.

See what tomoorow brings

well tried it earlier and kept loosing places so bottled out but after studying the forecast and doing some calculations I reckon its south east till the wind backs then head for CT. Nothing to loose on the YBW rankings apart from maybe 1 place to Slotmachine. Off to bed now for a restless night. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

I was somewhat dissapointed this morning. Still think it'll be interesting when the southern pack come up.

Well. I haven't lost any places overnight and have closed about 7 miles on the overall leader so there may still be some hope. I think there is going to be a lot of helming needed overnight and tomorrow. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Leading again Dipper!! http://www.dexam.co.uk/mytemp/sailonline.asp
The tension must be killing you. Have you told your wife you might be up all night.
I think Trev might be suffering a bit for being so far south right now but should gain a bit later when he will have more wind and a better angle. It's so close I wouldn't like to bet on anyone.

Blimey Dipper you're doing pretty good, I think you'll find there are some pro's in the pack and also some people will have been using routing software so well done....you're in a pretty good spot!

Next leg I'll try harder!

I think some people are using deckman software. Which is what the big boys use on their real boats.

Which has just reminded me that I have a demo copy lying around soewhere....

Went into town and came back to find I've gained 3 places and made up 4.6 miles on the leader. This is looking a bit better! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Trying to buy acetone and oxalic acid is like extracting hens' teeth. Do I look like a terrorist? Boots had never heard of oxalic acid. I don't know what they do in their chemistry lessons these days. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Well - I'm hovering around the 230-240 mark - I doubt I'm going to get any better .... big mistake was in the doldrums, I tried to make up for it by cutting corners down the south - at one time it may have paid off, but doesn't look like it now /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif Ah well - at least I'm not buying the beers in CT!! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Nobody said anything about beers. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

Anyway, Trev may get there first as he is catching up again in which case mine's another pint.

I've just noticed on the chat that some of them have been using routing software including the first two boats. Another was complaining that he has routing every hour but hates it as it kills the fun of the game.

Strange. Don't people want to use their own wits and skills? They might as well not bother. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I did have a brief look at larger forecast areas using UGrib .... but tbh it was no benefit at all!! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
