Mines a Regal 1800 - temp gauge goes to 250 and runs around 175 when motoring. Hope this is okay? /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif Got used to the car temp gauge only going to halfway!!!
Thats going to depend on what thermostat you've got in the engine - my 18ft Maxum has a 4.3l mercruiser in it and shipped with 160 deg stat as standard but when it jammed my Merc engineer swapped it for a 140 deg one because it also usually sorts out the common overunning problem when switching off the engine. I think when it was the 160 stat my guage read around 175 during normal use but bow runs a little cooler with the different stat.
Sorry Dave - should have posted what the engine was in the first place!! DOH!!!
Mine is a 1.8 Turbo Diesel Mercruiser but I have no idea about the stat. I am sure it is fine - we were blasting around for hours last weekend and it didn't blow up!!! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
The temperature gauges are really to provide a comparison with the normal situation. If it's higher or lower than you normally see, it's time to find out why. The position the sensor is, the coolant flow with your particular installation and the way the water flows inside the head(s) will all mean that comparisons between different boats are fairly meaningless. Comparing the same motors in the same type of boat with identical installation may be more meaningful. Perhaps.
Considering that most vehicle engines run with a stat in the region of 82 C (180 F), provided your engine it's fresh water cooled I'd say thet it's about right.
Raw water cooled engines usually run with a stat of approx 52 C (125 F), they have to run cooler or the salt water will cause problems in the cooling galleries. Salt water tends to build up a corrosive scale when the engine operates above 140°.
Yes I would say that mine run at about 80-85 degrees, on one occasion one reached 90 degrees or 95? and alarms went off all ovetr the place .... /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif
