What size outboard

I agree with the consensus. Whilst the Yam 80 2 stroke is a cracking engine that punches way above its weight, it would be horrible on the back of your Shetland at 4kts. Smokey, plugs would oil up, and way more power than you need. a modern 20-25hp 4 stroke would be my choice. It will cope with a load of people onboard and give you a little oomph when manoeuvring.

Well after seeing the boat which was a round trip of 6 hours then arranging a survey , I had a text message from the owner saying he has decided to keep the boat, aaaahhh

Oh well the search continues thanks for all your advice everyone

I don't know if everyone here would know that the Shannon navigation has more than a few large lakes and it is a large wide river, especially in the lower reaches. I would say 25hp as a minimum as early or late season flow can be 1-2 knots downstream if you are at a pinch point. However I would investigate what was the minimum size engine to get the boat to plane. It might be useful to have a bit in reserve if you need to make progress across a lake or to make a bridge opening or a lock closure - also it might add to the fun. I would go 4-stroke anyway as there are practically no waterside petrol pumps and you will be using jerry cans and yes you will be idling/pottering for long periods and a 2-stroke will be inefficient/nasty/smelly/loud.
