What price for breakfast ?

They/I haven't, though I've nicked some of Doug's suggestions ;)
Thread started as a result of some comments about The Shipwreck being expensive, though only one of those who commented has replied here
From the website they do seem a little highly priced on some things, but this could be down to having higher than normal quality. But unless people say which it is, I can see why Shotley are going to find it a little difficult to answer the comments
If they're doing a low quality bar menu, and charging those prices, I can see why people are complaining, but not many seem to be willing to say which it is
Like Jim's idea though, £100 sounds very reasonable :D

Dave, I dont think its the prices per se that are the problem. I for one don't mind paying a little extra for decent grub. But at the Shipwreck, the quality isn't there to match. The burger is a thin low quality affair, stuck in a plain white 'value range' bun, with a bit of grated cheddar stuck on it, a less than generous portion of very ordinary chips and some lettuce topped off with half a tomato. Its just not very exciting. In my opinion its worth less than a fiver.

From that description Neil I'm not surprised people are kicking up, thanks for that anyway, it answers the question nicely. Think lynching mob would be after me if I served that up at any price

My worst at the Shipwreck was last year, their so called "sausage & onion sandwich"... Stale granary bread and slimey (as in so cheap and finely minced) pink innards sausages. And they stole £5.75 for that and weren't at all apologetic.

Agree the Station Cafe at Woodbridge is excellent, but even better value and we think quality, is the Portacabin like cafe on the quay just over the railway footbridge.

Well worth a visit and slightly closer to the Tidemill.

That sums em up... They are just taking the piss out of their customers..

They really couldn't care less... They are serving unedible food and charging like a wounded hippo for it... They simply couldn't give a stuff.

It's the utter disdain I which they hold us that pisses me off... Its almost as if they are anti boaty people who think they we are all loaded and they can serve any old **** because there really isn't much of a choice without taking a taxi...

They do us all a disservice ... shotley gets a lot of visitors from the continent.. And this is what they get.

Perhaps it's worth looking into how the Shipwreck works financially. Is it owned by Shotley Marina, who just employ managers to run it? In other words the profits (?) go to Shotley Marina. Or is it leased to the managers, who are tenants and retain any profits they make?

That seems to be the big question, judging from what I'm reading here, because if it's being managed on behalf of Shotley marina, I'm thinking they're courting disaster. Hell, I could manage a place like that on my own, better than what I'm hearing. The cost of producing stuff like that in no way justifies the price, so I'm thinking maybe there's something else behind it. High overheads to a tenant might account for it, but the facts are as yet unknown, so I do hope somebody from there comes on here to explain, or do something about it
I'm not going to post a link to my place, but we're already getting plenty of repeat custom here, just doing bar food, which is what people are moaning and sailing away from at Shotley. People don't tolerate poor food standards, a good meal with a higher than average price, however, people like.

Had an OK dinner at the Shipwreck in June. One big problem for whoever runs a place like that is most of their trade must be Easter to October but still have bills to pay for the other months. Not something I would want to do and I did a degree in catering (and food science). Maybe that is why I never did it to make my living!

BTW I wouldnt want to pay much more than £7.50 for breakfast including coffee etc but agree quality beats quantity anyday.

Took family out tonight to mark no2 sons 21st a couple of weeks ago to a pub resturant of his choice - it was a pile it high place where most things were in breadcrums or steak. 2 of the boys went for the 'half moon' (mixed grill - steak, 2 lamb cutlets, 2 sausages, bit of gammon) for £17.50 but I thought the steak looked overcooked and dry, the sausage was probably a supermarket special so most disapointing. Mrs and I went to the non fried menu she had a very average crab salad and I had a lemon sole which had been cooked to a pulp! £85 for 5 for a very mediocre main course and a beer - wont be rushing back!

see my post on the other thread about the variability of quality. Neil's hamburger sounds rubbish - but the sausages I had with my Sausage Egg & Chips today were v good - proper butcher's sausages. Loads of chips and perfectly fried eggs.

Do they have more than one chef? Do they only cook fresh at busy periods and re-heat stuff the rest of the time? I'm genuinely puzzled...

You're not the only one, the only reason I can think of is that if they've only recently taken it on, maybe they're still sorting out suppliers and believe me, it's not always that simple to do. Loads of places think what they're going to get from the likes of Brakes Brothers is going to be as good as they need. Then when they've bought a big box of something they feel obliged to use it and not return to supplier as unacceptable
On the other hand, maybe they really don't care and just buy what's a good price at the time, and this time they got good bangers as opposed to those pink and slimy ones.
Used to work on the machines that made those things and having seen what goes into them, I couldn't bring myself to eat one
Hopefully someone from Shotley will let us know what's going on soon

We had a full English at Wells-next-the-sea last week. It had three bacon, two sausages, two eggs, black pudding, hash browns, fried bread, tomatoes and beans. It was excellent and cost £9. Well worth it.

Thumbsup to:
  • Tonys on the \bridge at Bourne-great value bacon and egg baguette
    • \fmyc
      • recent discovery-Cafe Marina near the student union at Ipswich. Spotless despite signs welcoming muddy boots, and great value. Lots of variations on the full english for £5 or £5.50 including coffee/tea & conveniently close to the local neighbourhood Tesco

Thumbs down to:
Shipwreck-expensive and staff attitude could do with a polish

LA at Ipswich haven. \not only expensive but on last brekkie in March one of the staff was sweeping up a large pile of dust and accumulated detritus fromthe previous night's do about ten feet away while we were eating.

Commendations to the two Woodbridge eateries already mentioned.
