Folks, I have an old Clarion headunit in the cabin which is a bit dated - no USB/MP3 CD input

But what I do really like about it is that there is a Clarion wired remote control at the helm - very handy. It's this one here: http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-Clarion...red-Marine-Remote-Control-White-/190804427424

I do not want to lose wired remote functionality - For this i'm thinking either replace the whole lot (headunit and remote) or replace with another head-unit that will work with this wired remote. The main issue with replacing the wired remote is that there is a recess especially for the control so i'd at least need to go bigger and flush mount - i'd lose the recess but don't mind this as the hole will be covered.

Does anyone know if that remote will work with other headunits and if so, which ones? I only need a normal car headunit as it will be located in the cabin so does not need to be waterproof.

Failing that can anyone recommend a unit that will work with a (new) waterproof wired remote control? I'll measure the recess this weekend to check that whatever I get would be bigger

I found a Clarion PDF sheet which shows compatible Clarion headunits - I reckon I may be out of luck and have to fork out for a new headunit & remote. A thought that crossed my mind is to just get a unit with a wireless remote and make the old wired remote redundant - however i'd need to know that it wouldn't require LOS to work as I don't have LOS with the headunit when at the helm... again if anyone has any ideas?!

this is one of the first jobs I did when I purchased the S28. ripped out the old Sony unit and replaced with a bluetooth enabled head above the galley with a Sony RM-x60m remote commander at the helm. very impressed with the setup, the bluetooth hook up is great and the remote commander is able to change tracks on the ipod whether it's connected through a wired MP3 jack or via bluetooth.

Here's the remote commander

and this is the head we fitted

edit: sorry, the head was this one actually http://www.sony.co.uk/support/en/product/MEX-BT2700

Thanks Gary. Ideally i'd like a headunit that has USB input... I don't have an iPod but have a USB stick with plenty of mp3's :D

Ironic that it's the cheapo Aldi/Lidl ones that have the USB inputs and not the mid-range headunits! But then the Aldi/Lidl ones don't seem to have a remote anymore :(

Mind me asking what the setup cost you? PM if you prefer

Sony'll do a head unit with USB, MP3 and bluetooth connectivity of that I am pretty sure and you can check online if the wired remote will fit. Head unit was an xmas present for around £60 I believe (second hand - I only get the best from my folk eh ;) ) and I picked up the remote and a 5m lead for £55 off Ebay

Sounds like the headunit i'm after! Don't suppose you have any clues? I'm Googling but not getting much

Thanks for the links lads.

dingdongs - looks like that one may suit me best as it comes with a wireless remote. I'm trying to Google to see if the wireless remote is bluetooth. If it is then great as it will work anywhere in the boat (esp the helm) - i'm trying to find the manual to see if it is indeed bluetooth (I know the stereo has bluetooth connectivity but not sure if this includes the remote)

-EDIT- Looks like the remote is IR... now is just the question as to whether risking it'll work or not?! Hmmmm :D

I ended up ordering the MEX-BT4000U stereo and the same wired remote as you Gary... i'm going to take the risk and hope that they will work together. There is a connection for wired remote and on the webpage for your model Gary (2700) it didn't list the marine remote as being compatible but obviously works so i'm going to be optimistic

good luck, as you say, so long as it has the remote connection and is able to connect a CD Changer unit, you should be ok. let us know how it goes

Hope the head unit and remote will suit your needs and you should be happy so long as you don't go down the amp and speaker route too.

I went down the amp route before and found that it drained the batteries - I don't have shorepower when away for the weekends and i'd tend to always leave the stereo on. I now prefer being able to run for long periods rather than pure loudness.

That said I do intend to upgrade speakers next but no amp

I just upgraded the head unit and the speakers on my boat and have come to the conclusion that the cause for the 'thin' audio esp. in the cockpit is that I didn't install an amp. Ie. while the Alpine gear I got should be of ok quality, the hu just doesn't have the wattage to properly feed the speakers. I'm going to add an amp and see how it changes things.

Just something to bear in mind when selecting the gear.
