What navigation instrument do you use?

I use the same basic rule whatever equipment is in use. Also worked during my motorcycle racing.

The seven "P"s.

Perfect Preparation and Planning Prevents Piss Poor Performance.

Our elderly Raymarine E120 plotter is only used for some of its functions. It's full cabability is not wanted as we might become too reliant on technology. Got to keep our hand in calculating leeway, tidal drift and course to steer from information recieved.

Paper charts, plotter and pencils are handy, log is entered hourly with position, COG and SOG.

Should it all go tits up with the electronics we can keep going the old fashioned way.

Works for us. ?

One of my friends, who is a rocket scientist, had an argument about vectors with her DS theory instructor. He was unaware of the vector requirement of magnitude and direction!

When I did my ICC, the instructor asked me to set a hypothetical course, which of course I did using basic vector triangles. The instructor was quite interested in my technique because I did it differently to the way it is usually taught, apparently! But to me it's just basic vector manipulation.

BTW I know it's not part of the ICC - I asked him to assess my general level to advise what (if any) courses I would benefit from. It was own boat tuition, so he had plenty of time.

Yes on my YMO theory I was asked something along the lines of:
A yacht is at position lat and long. It is traveling north at 5 knots. How far, and in what direction has it travelled if the tide is flowing East at:
A) 2 knots
B) 3 knots
Ç) 4 knots

I said that the position was irrelevant, it was just vectors, and used a compass rose.

That’s a great story. It’s reassuring that the instructor had an open mind and a will to learn something new.
Of course, if he was a great instructor, he would have later used the method, to those students who show aptitude, and claimed it as his own ?
