the strangest thing you have ever found floating in the sea?

I met a Xmas tree about 10 miles off St CAtherines once!

A full Guinness barrel off Lamorna Cove in Cornwall.

We flogged it to the pub next to the campsite that we were using. I think we drank most of it!

Did it have a fairy on the top?

I was once on night watch about 30 miles off the Azores a long time ago with a bright full moon and saw one of those floating bananas they tow people on from speedboats off the beach..... There was a moment there when I thought I had lost it..... Enjoyed entering it in the log though......

TCM.......... after he jumped ship to do a man over board excercise several hours out from Lanzarotte.

About 15 nm south of Port Ellen, Islay

Sailing gently north on a nearly flat-calm day, some miles off Achil Head, Eire, we noted ahead a large ( ~3 feet diameter ) inflated Dayglo buoy, the sort used by big crab boats. The water there is hundreds of feet deep, and the float seemed to be drifting free, so we thought to 'recycle' it.

I got up on the bow with the boathook, counting down the distance as per approaching a mooring, and we stopped a couple of feet away. 'Twas then I noticed the line leading down into the depths and, about 6-8 feet down that, a large rectangular box - like a big briefcase - well-wrapped in shiny polythene.

It certainly wasn't bait for crabs.

I waved John away, staring around to see if any other boats were visible. We pushed off sharpish, without touching the 'thing', and 'phoned it in only when we were two days away and well clear. The bored guy on the Customs Hotline could scarcely hide his indifference.... but did confirm it was almost certainly a 'commercial drop'.

Following on from the hobbit's musings. When in Gib Found a load of fist size packages all taped over with lots of parcel tape and joined together. Pulled them out and cut in to one and it was canabis resin (about 2Kg). i was worried that if found with them we might be accused so had it entered in the log and hightailed it to the police station.

Conversation with bored bobby went,

BB Can I help you sir?

ME I hope so cos I found this load of drugs.

BB yes sir, did you need directions for somewhere?

ME no...I really have got a load of drugs here that I pulled out the harbour.

BB Really? [long pause] OK let's see 'em then.

[much longer pause] Bloody hell!

He then went out the back to speak to his sargeant where I could overhear a very similar conversation take place!

(This was in my yoof and before the days of sensibly carrying multiple navigation instruments, or up to date charts and almanacs...)

The Sandettie Light Vessel- Because we were, basically coast hopping the UK from Ipswich and expecting the white cliffs of Dover to appear at the time.

Mirelle used to have a wonderful story about the time they went into Dartmouth and to their surprise found it was St Mary's ;-)

When going up and down the Thames sea-reach and in, we have encountered lots of odd objects including ; -

A large wooden garage door
An empty coffin ( no lid)
Lorry wheel/tyre
A wooden kitchen table floating upside down with legs in the air!

This can all be added to the tons of bits of wood, sleepers and planks that seem to wander up and down on their own!

And balls!, lost of balls, mainly footballs, but also tennis, rugby and basketballs! Always see a minimum of 15 between Queenborough and St Kats! WHY????
