Marine Traffic have a UK registered vessel called Shannon Kimberley at present heading south on the Sound of Mull. The type is noted as "Wing in Grnd"- what on earth is that?

EDIT:
Oban is safe from invasion. They'll go the wrong side of the buoy and hit the Corran Ledge. :p

It's probably a glitch in the binary AIS data. I've seen ships report as "SAR Aircraft" on more than on occasion, then turn back into a ship a few minutes later when the next static message came in. The type isn't sent as the text "SAR Aircraft" or "Fishing Vessel", but as a number in the "type of ship" space in the message. If a 4 accidentally comes through as a 7, or whatever, hey presto your trawler is flying. You even get an altitude, I assume because one of the other fields is used for this purpose when the type is "SAR aircraft", and suddenly "rate of turn" say is interpreted as "metres above sea level".

...misunderstandings and neglect create more confusion in this world than trickery and malice. At any rate, the last two are certainly much less frequent.

Reminds me of the 1966 World Cup Final debacle. The one where England beat West Germany. The Swiss referee asked the Soviet linesman if the "goal" was in fact a goal. He replied "niet" and the referee thought he meant it had hit the back of the net when, in fact, he meant "No".
The rest, as they say, is history. :D
