You need to chase the connection through to where it's connected to 'the kit'. Which bit of kit will help identify its purpose.

My guess is that it's some kind of serial-USB adaptor.

You might be able to plug your laptop into it and get GPS data etc into OpenCPN.

Plug it into a laptop and see what it says in Windows' Device Manger. Google the VID & PID.

I'm with the others.. and that's what I use mine for...

It is a multi serial to USB Adaptor. Can be used for talking to or listening to NMEA ports. If you have a laptop running suitable software then you can connect it to your nav system. There are unused Ports which can be used for all sorts .
