What is the worst marine invention, ever?

I also agree with the deck socket/plug combo nomination.

This year I removed mine because it was always corroded. I was going to replace it like for like but couldnt be bothered because I know in time that will go the same way as the old one. I ponded using deckglands, but then I came up with a plastic pipe fitting from an outboard external fuel tank which fitted in the hole and had a nice 90 degree bend in it.

I fitted that instead. There is no chance of rain getting in. The bend is a couple of cm above the deck so most spray or water on the decks wont go down it. To make it extra dry I could add some flexible pipe to the end and take it into the mast.

Probably needs a photo to make sense.

Joe.

Mobile phones are our life blood. We'd be trapped in the cottage without one. I've lost number of the bookings we've taken whilst out on the lake. Sometimes people say "is that water I can hear?"

I suggest GPS because some people get lulled into a false sense of security.

Not sure about vhf, either.

Are you a bit iffy about a sound hull as well? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I'm with Duncan. Mostly electronics add little value to time honoured techniques except a simplicity that can deceive some into implicit trust.

I still enjoy playing with 'em - just won't trust 'em unless confirmed by something else like mk1 eyeball & brain.

By the way MajorC, I see no link in your post between electronics which are simply an add-on toy (albeit sometimes useful) and a sound hull which is a basic essential.

No electronics are needed to sail ANYWHERE, whether it is ocean cruising or pottering the Solent. If they really were essential there would have been no sea trips before about 1960-70-ish.

Its a great picture having a lawn mower on board. Imagine how confidence inspiring it would be to your passengers and guests if during a bit of a blow you camly started carrying out some routine maintenance on your lawnmower!!! They would think you were a real old salt!!!
