Had a wonderful potter around the Steamboat Museum on a rainy September day 12 years ago. Will hazard a guess, could it be Captain Flint's houseboat in 'Swallows and Amazons'?
Nope. That's Esperance. (although that has a similar historical importance to the subject of this question. Esperance is the oldest boat on Lloyd’s Register of Shipping) (I think that may Register of Yachts?)
If my memory serves me well, it is Steam Launch Dolly, 1850: This Windermere boat is the oldest mechanically propelled boat in the world, built at the time of the Great Exhibition. She sank in Ullswater in 1895 and lay forgotten until discovered by divers in 1960. She was salvaged by divers and restored by George Pattinson.
See. suprising isn't it. They also have the oldest and second oldest vessels on Lloyds Register as well as Beatrix Potter's rowing boat and Arthur Ransome's dinghy and Amazon.
As Fred Walker said to me (he is a naval architect, Clyde shipbuilder and built the replica Endevour) "If it was cars or steam trains it would be a National Museum, but no-one's interested in boats"
The museum has now closed a total refurb, including the restoration of the exhibits. It could be as long as 3/5 years before it's all ready for display again.
I was very suprised by the answer, not the kind of record breaker you would expect to turn up in a shed in cumbria.
