What is commissioning?

Usually it means putting the boat together from its shipped state, eg putting the mast up, along with standing rigging, threading all the running rigging, removing any packaging/protection from hull engine, keel, prop shaft/saildrive, polishing and cleaning, filling tanks, fitting gas bottle etc etc...

Not cheap though is it!

Originally getting a naval vessel "in all respects ready for sea".

In today's leisure market ? Making sure all the electrickery and mechanicals work to spec, lockers and drawers stay shut or open as required, no leaks, free bottle of wine or whisky in the galley.... ?

Thanks for the replies. However, it sounds a bit like the piece of string analogy. Presumably there must often be disagreement between the broker or boat manufacturer and the buyer as to what should have been done for the commissioning money. Or am I being paranoid?

It\'s four thousand pounds sir...

Hm, it's some arbitrary slapped-on fee with the flimsy excuse of the boat bits needing to be to be "tuned" or suchlike.

It's essentially a charge cos erm they can get away with it.

Worth trying telling thhem that you *do* want the boat, all nicely working as a boat as in the adverts and spec - but not the commissioning charge, thanks.

If they say that they need to commission it to make it all boat shaped with everything working, praps tellem that really they'll also need a phone system to take the calls from customers like you PLUS a car to be able to get to work each morning - but you don't expect to be charged for any of those either, thanks. Just the boat please, not the commissioning.

heehee

interestingly though,if you buy a boat that is so big it can't be trucked to the uk...they still charge commissioning in the uk? Even though er it must've gotten here ok, so it's already a boat?

Re: It\'s four thousand pounds sir...

don't worry, it's only by hurling huge chunks of cash at things for no good reason, and by cocking things up big-time that you gain real experience, i reckon!

Who was it charged you commissioning , out of interest?

Re: It\'s four thousand pounds sir...

Your first mistake... there aren't any wise forumites around these parts....... /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif enjoy your new boat, forget the commissioning charges, and look forward to longer warmer days ahead.....

Re: It\'s four thousand pounds sir...

As a dim SWMBO who finally snapped at SIBS and decided to buy after the longest boat-gestation in history (with a screaming and kicking other-half trying to stop me)....I signed. Never seen a grown man cry before! Problem is I am not sure from the contract where commissioning comes in as it's not mentioned and I want to be prepared before getting back to them about it.

Re: It\'s four thousand pounds sir...

um, i reckon that if you've signed for a boat, they have deliver boat, working, with whatever g'tees. The commissioning should be rolled into that price.

If on the other hand you signed and now they're feeling free toadd commissioning on top, well, er, that shdn't happen really.

Re: It\'s four thousand pounds sir...

Thanks TCM. They haven't mentioned the "C" word yet which I why I'm planning my response for when they do, if they do. Delivery is extra and I haven't decided what to do about that yet as it's coming from abroad. Good luck with your own boat hunt. Hope your SWMBO doesn't take the decision out of your hands like I did!

Re: It\'s four thousand pounds sir...

hm well we'd probly have a boat by now if she'd bort it. Actually not true, we'd probably have sailed it somewhere, done lots of other saily stuff and sold it and be getting on with the next thing, and be planning the thing after that...

It's a rip-off charge only found in the UK.

The easiest way to explain is to use the car analogy - it's the price "on the road" as opposed to the list price.

You want to drive this car/sail this boat? That's going to cost you extra /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

Re: ooh - nearer 21months?

Should add that I could have had it earlier but didn't want to take delivery in November (14 month wait). Also allows HWMBO even longer to get over the shock and come to terms with my recklessness....or maybe find a new SWMBO before then!
