What is a Honda 4HP 4 stroke outboard worth?

No I am not trying to sell one or circumvent the forum rules. I might be looking to buy one.

So my starting point is what would you expect to pay for a second hand Honda 4HP 4 stroke outboard with a remote fuel tank?

The one I have a chance to buy is going to sealed bids with unknown history, but we will get a chance to inspect it, and the only thing we know is the boat it was from arrived under power of the OB so it did run a year ago.

Inspection is key to the decision, obviously. If water cooling channels run clear, if it looks reasonably loved and runs and is a reputable brand I might go to £250 ish but would not go higher unless there were some serious guarantees .
You can see what used ones go for on ebay. £400 for an (allegedly) reasonable one.

As there is risk with anything like this I tend towards either shelling out for a new or nearly new item from a reputable dealer with returns policy, or going dirt cheap and therefore happy to risk it.

That £400 middle zone is too expensive for me without enough of a safety net.

I have bought several 2 strokes on ebay for well under £200 each. They didn't run properly at first but we got there after a few weekends taking things to bits. It was invariably gummed up carbs, air vent or lines.

It is to be sold by the club. The latest is they are going to test it to see if it runs and then invite sealed bids from members. We have asked to go and inspect it personally and awaiting their reply. If we are able to do that we will get more information.
