What I want

<font color=blue>On some boats you will see a sort of stainless steel rod fixed to the centre of the bow rail, this is usually guaged to the highest point of the boat. When approaching a bridge one can then see if the rod goes under, if it does then you know the rest of the boat will.
Has anyone any idea where I can get one of these?

Should be able to get one made up by a stainless steel man. Could have done with one of those last time I went under H'Smith bridge had a crew member on the roof peering at the underside of bridge

I'd have thought anyy stainless fabrictor could knock one up. Crayside Marine do what looks to be reasonable stainless.

On second thoughts how about a long GRP fishing rod blank would bend easier than stainless.

Hmmmm just made me think. Could you use a builders laser levelling device which measures distance. Quite cheap these days from people like screwfix.com

<font color=blue> Yeh! Hammersmith can be a bugger especially on Springs even quite low boats can come a cropper there. I am sure someone already does these rods, I have even seen a spring loaded one. Mainly you see them on Brooms, maybe they do them as a special order.

Hi Byron
I agree with those who mentioned the fishing rod blank system. A short Kevlar blank say 6 feet ( cut to correct length with a hacksaw) with an attached "bendy" Fly fishing tip. This would be held to the pull pit with a standard (stainless) staunchion "rod holder" which could be lowered as needed. I am sure this assembly would do the trick.

Byron, why not use the whip aeriel from your old decca set, if it touches it will just bend and not break.

<font color=blue>Thats a thought too, problem is the height is critical I must have it to exact height or may 1" or so over. Assuming the aerial is long enough (9' I think) cutting a bit off the top will make it look a bit naff.

I was trolling on E;bay and come across a million rods for sale and holders plus "wippy Fly tops" Why not have a look there worthn a try?

One of the dinky little wind indicator things that the dinghy sailors and other raggies use at the top of their masts? Bet there's a proper name for it. Seen a few boats on the Ouse using them. And they have the benefit of bending easily if you are a bit too tall.
