What happened to the quadcopters??

That should drop the cost of the submersible ones down to what I'm willing to pay in 2014 :p

Tend to agree with you Vas in principle, as a 3 legged stool is easier to get right than 4. Only ever flown a single rotor toy heli, and that was not the easiest thing. Would not strap any of my camera's to it!

I did read a dedicated quadcopter forum thread on this product.
There was a question that the speed controllers (being totally enclosed in the plastic "arms") wouldn't get too hot.
The designer/manufacture replied to the thread with a satisfactory answer - something along the lines of "Yes but after 45 mins of flying the speed controllers were not hot enough to do any damage"
Maybe a bit of a concern though.
Also, I read somewhere else that the motors can handle being wet but could suffer from corrosion/bearing breakdown especially if used in sea water.
The motors are completely exposed to the water.
Maybe think of the motors as "consumables" like the props!!
I would have thought that they would last a season especially is rinsed with fresh water after use
 
so the new forum standard submersible/floating quadcopter....

Now, with a couple of jfm's favourite lumishores attached, plus the standard GoPro, there is a device for checking the underwater hull, looking at props/stabilisers, watching the anchor set into the seabed properly, tracking the tender at night (that would be fun)...

Beats work any day :)

Mike, i think the brushless motors are fine if dunked. I've examined and dunked my DJI ones. As you say, freshwater rinse and also a WD40 spray sometimes. All fine

The waterproof quad guys have emailed me. Very helpful. The machine is RTF but has lots of spec choices so I've had to ask for some clarifications and then I'll order one. It's a more serious machine: upgrades include 3 grades of motor, carbon fibre props, etc. You choose the spec, they build it and test fly it, then ship it RTF. About US$1000 with decent spec. I'll let you know how it goes

I've been drooling over their website for the last few days. I'd be really interested to hear how you get on. Now that I have a fancy new GoPro, I just need something to attach it to!

Also, did you ever get round to posting the video of your Phantom disaster??

I've been watching your threads on quadcopters with interest.
I quite fancy the idea for exactly the same reason as you
I was just looking for something a bit more robust and waterproof - hence the link above.
My son has been playing with fixed wing models recently but something gets broken every time he goes out!!
It seems to me that these Aquacopters could be the answer.

No, not got around to it yet. The file off the GoPro is huge and my normal laptop can't handle it. I'll get around to it though.

Reference the new Aquacopter, it'll be early summer before I have results. The autopilots, plus the human pilot in my case, are not 100% reliable so the way to use it, I think, is to be prepared to ditch it in the sea and have the tender ready to go and collect it. I won't have a boat in commission to do that till June although we might get chance for a try out on another antibes-forumite boat before then

Some miner (sic) observations:-

A) JFM-junior is smarter than Jobs so that is no excuse! Get J*** on the case. Full video of Quadcopter goes "Thunderbird 3" required immediately!

B) At least one Boat available as soon as aquacopter can deliver --- bring on the Med weather ( or even a F2)
