Hi

I have this primary fuel and I wonder what fitting it was. It takes a BF825 Balwin filter with a glass bowl underneath.

Not sure ever been changed. So that is a winter job!

It is indeed a CAV296/Delphi 296

The Sea Start tutorial linked to in post #6 is a great example of why so many people have issues after changing these filters, it's a disgraceful demonstration.

From the outset, old rags are a poor method of collecting spilt fuel. The best things are proper fuel spill pads. Some people use disposable nappies. As a last resort a load of kitchen roll will do in a pinch.

More importantly is the lazy way in which only one of the four seals are replaced. It is important to also change the top seal, the seal on the retaining bolt and the seal on the spigot that fits into the top/centre of the filter. Failing to change all of the seals often leads to air leaks, causing difficulty in bleeding and all sorts of headaches.

Thank you. I have five orings in the soare crossland 522 filter; two large that i assume go on top/bottom of replacement filter.

Three smaller ones; around 12mm, 6mm abd 4mm.

You will all be amused to hear its in a really fun place to get to!!! (Not).

These are often fitted in fun places. Replacement filter heads are available which take spin on filters.

The o-rings you describe will be for the spigot, the retaining bolt and possibly the drain screw on the bowl (not all replacements include this).

The two large ones will be for either side of your new filter. But there is also one between the glass bowl and the base plate, this should be changed also, you need to buy extra O-rings if you have a glass bowl.

IIRC, the third large O ring is a different size to the other two. As you say, best to replace with a spin on filter, I won't have a CAV 296 on a boat.

I found that if space below the filter is limited you can use the tin/foil containers that your chinese talkaway comes in. It can be bent under the filter.
It's important to check that the top rubber seal hasn't been twisted when fitting. A mirror would be useful to check before offering up the filter.
The seal on the spigot coming down from the top housing can be a bugger to remove if you use a screwdriver. I use a prick tool to remove it.
If you take your time and are careful it shouldn't be a problem.

Thanks all for the catching and other tips.

I will collect some catchers and in a weekend or two come down again and replace/bleed.

Also need to do the engine feul filter and oil.

IIRC a very small difference so worth checking carefully, but I don't think I've changed a 296 for 20 years. Still have loads of the seals stashed away, obviously never changed the whole set!
