What do you want a navigator to do?

I absolutely expect the navigator to put us in contact with a solid part of this planet - via ropes and fenders or anchor rode at the end of our trip

Sorry :)
Parking is the skipper’s job. Navigation is the haven finding art, once the navigator has found the haven and advised the skipper on the entrance, her or his job is done.

Parking itself, sure. But when acting as the navigator, I feel obligated to stand at the skipper/helm’s shoulder and talk them through the pilotage too. I’d probably also have radiod/phoned ahead for a berth If appropriate. Then there’s keeping the log up to date, next day’s weather and passage plan…. A navigator’s job is never done, until the boat is secured on her own mooring. Even then, I’ve been responsible for software upgrades, chart updates etc.

With some other Forum members on here, I helped deliver a boat to Eastbourne.

The owner was on board. On the last leg, he told me ’you are only here to get the hours in’ (in a very Russian accent). I pointed out to him that I (and the others) all had our own boats and were only there to help him. He told me ‘you are only here to navigate’.

I navigated him to the SWM off Eastbourne and into the lock where I got off the boat and left him to his own devices. I went up to the Marina Office, apologised and said that I had left him alone in the lock. The lady in the office said that she was on her own and that there was no else to help him but not to worry because he was obnoxious.

I didn’t…
