The manual says it needs to be full of propylene glycol. Can something easier to buy be used instead?

I was told by a marine electronics engineer to use cheap frying oil. It works fine giving a good picture even at high (20+ knots) speeds
Tank should be filled with non-toxic antifreeze (propylene glycol). Do not use mineral oil.
Castor oil works well.
Castor oil was specified for mine when I installed it 30odd years ago. It does not seem to deteriorate overtime like some/many cooking oils.
