What did you do next Skip (i)

Snorkel, mask, and a couple of limpet mines, would have done the job. You'd need to check the depth alongside due to the wreck underwater however, before attempting to berth there. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

You need to read the full situation and place yourself in the position of the skipper , 6 hours of hammer, 5 hours wet....... moments of nasty thoughts are only to be expected, they occur in a fraction of a second and are unavoidable , I clearly stated my reply was not serious.

But then you need to wait for what actually happened, I don't think you are going to be very impressed /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

My first priority was to avoid the current taking me into the raft of boats astern of me, As he walked down his sidedecks he pushed against my bow cleat with his joisting pole, He had by now realised that his actions were about to cause damage to several boats as numerous crew from the boats in the raft astern were standing by ready to fend off. I politely asked him not to move the pole as I needed to power around so as not to damage his boat and I increased power to the starboard engine which pulled my stern out and away from danger.

As this was against the current and wind I needed a lot of power and the clot holding the pole was in a real sweat , if he relaxed 7 ton pushed by 200 hp would ram into him. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Once my stern was out far enough I was able to go astern and out of danger, as I did this the clot fell forward narrowly avoiding falling over his own guard rail. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Now this still left the problem of how or where we berthed……..

The second attempt was no so gentle, /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
this time we were close to ramming speed, anchor first.
With the wind blowing and carrying my voice his way I said to swmbo in a loud voice
‘ don’t worry, I will sort it, I can do it from up here’ with a big grin on my face and ensuring the clot could see I picked up my dinghy anchor (folding 4 blade type) , locked it open , coiled the rope and started to swing it round like a grappling hook.

Thankfully he saw the funny side, laid down his spear and took the bow line, before rushing to the stern to take the stern line from me, I smiled at him , introduced myself , offered him a beer and nothing more was said about the subject .

Now , what should I have done /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

And who's posting what did you do next skip (ii) /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Excellent. You with your grappling hook and him with his spear sounds like a scene from a gladiator movie. You didn't strip down to your trunks and apply some baby oil to your rippling muscles as well, did you?

Re: What did you do next Skip (i)

There was no need to cross his decks as it would not get us ashore, we used are dinghy.
We let him out in the morning 0900 ish and then we went back along side .

Daka

No problem with 'hijacking'. But I think some of the WIDNs would make perfectly good WNSs.

Anyway... I was wondering if - once you'd got it all squared away - whether you asked yourself:

1. Why did I set out in a F6 in a 31 footer?

2. Why did I get soaked up on the flybridge when I could have driven from the lower helm position and stayed dry and comfy?

Re: What did you do next Skip (i)

1/ Because if you had done much sailing, you would realise that mostly, you dont know what the weather will be. Weather forcasts arnt that accurate.

2/ Because your far more aware of whats going on, on the fly bridge and can deal with things much better. Down stairs, it's more like, just hope for the best.

Re: What did you do next Skip (i)

Well, 2 is obviously true when mooring, but I'd rather accept the reduced visibility when cruising, than having "each wave smacking me in the face"...
After all, what else could you do if cruising in the same conditions at night?

Re: What did you do next Skip (i)

Dam, thats the other problem with WNS, some one comes up with the other problem. Eventually you go down stairs of course. Or need to go upstairs, not sure.!! This whole WNS thingy has got me all at a tither.

Re: What did you do next Skip (i)

Dear Tony,

I would like to sincerely apologise if you feel I spoilt any of your ideas, that was certainly not my intention.

Your first response was perhaps tongue in cheek or ironic /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif
As the rest of the forum realise it is no good being subtle with daka, I am too thick to recognise either of these, if you had sent me a pm I could have deleted or you could have asked Dan to delete which I would not have minded, complaints after it is too late for me to delete make me think I am being trolled........doh, the penny has dropped you got me /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Now to answer why I was out in a F6 in a 31ft boat

Ignoring the fact that it is not easy understanding French terms and this was before the days of lap tops and dongles

the previous day was GF8 the next day was going back to 8-9 so I waited for wind with tide and went for it.

We were not actually in a small boat as we had just sold the 23 ft Bayliner, the 31 ft boat was BIG and gave a very comfortable ride compared to a sports boat.

Haydn has pretty much covered why I was upstairs and I would like to add that every wave hits the lower screen and visibility is as poor as a sports boat, in those conditions I wouldn't want to pick up a pot or net.

The main reason was of course swmbo was down stairs and 5 hours of
' the coast guard was right about the weather after all '
/forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Just a thought but I don't see why you can not run the same question but properly as you will not have seen any input from the members that have me on ignore and I am sure there are a lot of us who would really like to hear your input so we know what we should do in these situations /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Kind regards

Pete

Re: What did you do next Skip (i)

Dear Daka

You haven't spoilt any of MY ideas; just that I was hoping to steal some of YOURS. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Your answers to my tongue in cheek questions make perfect sense. But I admire your fortitude: many people would have turned round and gone back when the first wave smacked them in the face.

Well, hopefully EVERYONE ELSE has got the message by now that ME TELLING YOU is not what this is about. Or do I detect just a tiny trace of sarcasm?

I had a similar situation at the weekend which reminded me, it will be useful to know the text book response as to how one is supposed to deal with this sort of situation perhaps after everyone has had a good laugh at me you can enlighten us as to what I should have done ?

I keep forgetting that I am supposed to be fount of all knowledge and that my opinion is sacrosanct. The correct course of action would have been to grab the boat hook out of his hands, turn it round, hook it in his belt and dump him over the side. Whether you should then hold him under until he stops struggling is a matter of personal opinion.

OK?

Tony.

I have been a while responding as it took me a while to read through the real WNS,and now understand your comment I can see why you thought I was being sarcastic /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

There are some 'little tinkers' on this forum /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif
