what chartplotter??

There's an eBay chap local to me who deals in avaition stuff, he sells a lot of Garmin products, gave me a quote to similar to US prices.

not enough said.....
(1) it would have been supported for 2 years from Garmin's perspective however some traders were still selling stock a lot later
(2) it was Navionics that supported the charts - not Garmin. Agreement couldn't be reached about continuing support which was one of the primary reasons for Garmin to go it alone in the future to avoid being dependant on a third party (as far as possible).

I say this as someone who has not one but two large Garmin differential GPS plotters purchased 1999 and 2000.
I find it amazing how certain people have to have a dig everytime some topics come up.

I have a PC based plotter but if I was going to get a standalone plotter I was stay away from Garmin due to them using their own charts and go with a system that uses cmap nt link or similar. Raymarine at the show looks great though I'm not so sure on their radar capability. Furuno is as good but the cursor jumps about a bit and the screen doesn't seem quite as clear. Simrad, I haven't seen so can't comment. Lowerance, I haven't seen but be very careful with supported chart types; Navman, I have used no a friend's boat and have been well impressed. Very bright and clear and detailed for the size (only 6inch) and doesn't have any drawbacks as far as I can see. Don't worry about that recent magazine review on plotters that said the screen of the navman was fuzzy. It is crystal clear!!! I think lack of research and use on the mag's part...

BTW I'm looking at changing my softwaer chartplotter to WinChart NautiQ. You get the entire UK and Ireland vector charts in full detail included with the software - it's brand new released at the Southampton Boat show. Anyone used this?

[/ QUOTE ] and yet you happily endorse the Raymarine units - which use the same Navionics charts!

btw fuzzy is going to be relative - at around 1800 pixels per sq inch the Navman isn't going to be as sharp as, for example only, the Lowrance unit at 11,000+ ppsq" is it.

FWIW I don't have this Lowrance unit but would buy it if I was purchasing for this application right now. I have had 2 previous Lowrance units, one still in use, without problem.

now we have finally decided on a boat, (a decision that took over a year!) we now have to decide on a marina (a new thread topic im sure), we were looking at the south coast, Port Solent for instance...

Like many others I purchased a Garmin 230 plotter in 1999 for around £860 and invested many hundreds of pounds in G charts. As far as I am concerned I bought from Garmin in good faith and they just abandoned me and many others. Their much touted "trade in " offer for new technology was derisory. Never again.

I recently bought a Navman 5600 as a back up plotter and have ended up using it as my main plotter because it's so easy to use. No prob with sunlight viewing, mine is on the flybridge
Best deal from JGT in Weymouth

In my sportsboat I had a demountable Garmin 276C which was brilliant. In my Targa 37 I've got a Raymarine SL70C which I find much less intuitive than the Garmin. If I was going again from scratch I'd buy Garmin.

Depends what you want to spend! I have been looking at the Standard Horizon 175c chart plotter at SIBS. My reason is a friend has one and I think its absolutely brilliant for the money! Its got a 6" screen which is sunlight viewable and only costs £590. plus charts. I paid that two years ago for a Garmin 176c and although its not bad, the screen is much smaller and its rubbish when the sun shines on the screen!
You can order it over the web from the states and as the exchange is good at mo it comes out at just under £500.

Regards Barry

If money is not tight definitely go for the Furuno but go for a 10.4 inch screen .

i have a 10.4 on the lower deck and a 7 inch ( diag measurement ) on the fly and the 7 inch is just too small.

A 7 inch is half the width of a 10 inch

You all seem to have lost sight of original question in a frenzy to answer. How the hell do you put a 10" screen in a boat that size

276 Garmin will do the job fine

Re: 276 garmin

think of it as the same antenae but mounted in a different place ie if you stuck the external one next to the unit you would have the same accurracy.

in practice on an small open top boat you get the same accuracy - ttey are 12 channel receivers and loosing the odd satelitte from time to time isn't going to stop them putting your position to 30/50ft

Re: 276 garmin

Browsing carefully at the boat show I reckoned the Navman 5600 is the way to go, and; - if you hang on till January [according to the Navman Rep] they are releasing an upgraded model, the 5650? with a new faster processor that will handle the new C-map Max charts and has a much higher screen resolution.

If however you can afford it their Trackfish 6600 Plotter/Sounder has both an even larger, better rez screen and c-map max support plus if you buy one this month you'll get a free 7200 dsc vhf thrown in for about £1150.

JG technologies seem competetive, although I have not bought from them.
