What Boat

I'm looking for a boat under 30' to sail in the solent and do the occassional channel crossing. It'll just be me and my wife and 5 year old daughter so I'm not looking for loads of space. I would prefer a good sea boat that's easy to handle. I also don't mind paying for something that will hold its value.

Any suggestions and reasons welcomed.

After you have finished looking in the museums, take a look at an ETAP 28i or 30, they look modern and are bullit proof, loads of room for the size down below will keep all happy.

The ETAP 30 is slightly heavier than the 28i so is a little more up to the rough stuff. Having said that we sail a 28i and have sailed her top end of a 6, dont go looking for a blow but it will handle those wind strengths if needed.

The reasons for going for an ETAP are endless. The most important atribute for you and your family is the fact that hit an old fridge or pallet mid channel, putting a hole in the side, she WILL NOT SINK!

I really love Etaps and have them on my short list.

However there have been examples where the foam filling the space between the moldings has got water-logged resulting in a heavy boat and difficult to dry out if you need to do anti-osmosis treatment.

Great boats but I would recommend a survey.

Never heard of that before. I would like to know more. One example of a 28i that surveyed with high readings INSIDE was as a result of a shower being fitted in the heads!

Generally they are very very dry.

One ETAP surveyed just recently, that I know of, attracted comments by the surveyor that he had to turn the meter to the most sensitive setting to enable a reading at all!

But you are right, always always get a survey on any boat you intend to buy

Lots of suggestions, but no reasons why you should choose one boat as opposed to another, just peoples preference. £30k will buy a good ETAP, you have already been given some key reasons to choose ETAP.
