Hi, I have a honda 5hp lying in my shed and I was looking for some advise on what boats it is suitable for. I have a shetland 535 that I have just bought and am currently restoring but from a previous post I don't think the 5hp will do much for it. I am not wanting a fast boat, just one to get me about a mile in a calmish day in sheltered waters to fishing ground. thanks in advance.

Could you not just keep it as an auxiliary for the Sheltland once it's complete?
I used to run a 5hp on the back of a 12' open dingy for river fishing, I wouldn't, personally, have taken it to sea though.
With a small boat like the Shetland, would it not be worth taking advantage of the fact that you can run it a fast boat, fairly cheaply, with a suitable outboard?

I had a customer that had a 70hp Chrysler on the back of one of these.!Dangerous boat with that amount of HP,skipped on a turn and the fuel tanks went over the side together with the gas bottle.9.9 to 15hp would be plenty. As Murv said ,keep the 5 hp as a back up.

A 535 is a decent enough old boat, I would think 5HP would be ok for moving her about without too much tide but you need at least 50HP really if you want to plane her. Shaft length may also be an issue.
