What are your current practical boat projects?

Varnishing below decks in hi-gloss finish-think we need a psychiatrist!Eight coats with rub down between each layer.................nearly finished one cabin, which does look magnificent! New curtains and upholstery, all whilst living aboard.

Continuing with the refit of my Harley 25. Full story here: http://harley25refit.blogspot.co.uk Having completed the wheelhouse and most of the cockpit over the last year, the final cockpit job is to fit an access hatch so I can fit the steering sender. The main job will be lining out the cabin (seems to be a popular winter job). Despite what I said in my last blog post, I need something to do when the weather is too bad for fishing.

To do:
Create database system bigger than googles' to keep track of the to do list....

:)

I've already done that bit! It's not hard to keep track, though, I find, as jobs seem to move off the list painfully slowly, and are usually replaced by new ones being added on.

We have 2 boats (one in use, and a 'project boat'), and dividing the limited available time/energy/weather between them means progress is glacial.

Boat in use just about to have new forehatch fitted to replace the old one which recently started leaking. Varnishing above decks, anti-fouling, deck paint and hull polish can wait until spring or a new owner.

The project boat is in the midst of new headlining for the saloon and rebedded windows, then moving on to replacing engine exhaust and finishing cockpit and deck drains plumbing and skin fittings. Only then will it be worth reopening the database to see what to tackle next - spoilt for choice!

Did I mention I hate DIY?

Feeling v. pious about achievements to date:

Took holly floor boards back to bare wood and revarnished (4 coats flat matt)
Treated weathered teak cockpit table with Danish Oil - looks better than new but how will it wear?
Changed engine oil and antifreeze

I'm now considering whether to have her (15 year old Benny 331) slipped and change all hull fittings/seacocks

Took on a new project this year so I won't bore everyone with the full list!
Priorities are:
- stop it raining inside the cabin
- get all the electrics working
- fit the stanchions, pulpit, and pushpit
- fit beaching legs & windvane

I must be mad...

I have the usual long list of maintenance tasks for this winter, but also plan to include some enhancement projects:
  • Fit a boom brake - Project brought about as result of a near accident last summer when the autopilot went walkabout.
  • Raise the chart table seat to make it more comfortable - easier than lowering the table.
  • Add pole to stern for radar, AIS, GPS and other antennae.
  • Remote gas bottle switch over - With locker in transom, too difficult to swap over at sea.
  • Make and fit lee cloths to saloon berths - As much for bags as for crew.

My job list is the same as ever. Try to finish some of the jobs I've started, and not finished, over the last 20yrs:encouragement:
