Hi Folks,

At last getting ready for the trip from the Forth to the Clyde and wanted advice on what are the best Pilot books (and charts for that matter) for the trip around? Also, where's the best place to buy them?

I haven't made the final decision yet as to whether to go around the top or through the Caledonian canal.

Cheers,

Joe

Hi Joe
Best Pilot Books for the west coast are the Clyde Cruising Club books but they are not cheap. For the East coast , Forth Yacht Clubs Association Pilot book covers from Berwick to Peterhead, Reeds Nautical almanac covers all the caost of the UK and has enough detail to get you safely in and out of harbour.
If you are in Edinburgh, Bosuns Locker and Seaspan have Imray charts. Chattan Security in Easter Road have both Admiralty charts and the others.

Graham

This is the pilot book you want.

The Yachtsman's Pilot to North and East Scotland by Martin Lawrence.

Give me a call if you come into Peterhead.

Best pilot books for West Coast - Martin Lawrence by Imray.

Titles are - Clyde to Colonsay; Isle of Mull & Adjacent Coasts; Skye and Northwest Scotland; Western Isles

Best charts - I prefer Admiralty but its all a matter of choice here. Note there is a new leisure folio for the southern part of the West Coast.

Hope this helps.

Having sailed the West Coast of Scotland for a fair old time I still consider the Clyde Cruising Club pilots to be the best available....not cheep at about £35 each, and I think you need 3 to cover most of Scotland but without doubt the best.

As for charts you can buy secondhand corrected or uncorrected at www.chartsales.com

Paul.

CCC Sailing Direction are pretty good. Can be ordered online Here.

Martin Lawrence has also complied Sailing Directions. Some people say he scares a bit by implying that some places should be for 'experienced' yachtsmen only(here there be dragons...) I would say that he's only giving fair warning

I carry both.

As a newbie, don't know about the best pilot books, but we've just bought the small craft folio of admiralty charts. Ours covers the Clyde estuary, including the Mull of Kintyre. 37.50 for a very comprehensive set. There's a second set for further North and West. Very good value for money.
