Lagos, Portugal. 19.22. About 5 deg above horizon. Huge. Beautiful corn yellow. Clear skies. never seen a moon like it. Awesome.
Overcast here....
We were commenting on this in the pub tonight. Apparently, the moon's perigee, the distance from the moon to the earth, is the closest for nearly two decades, hence the spectacular rising moon tonight.
See other threads. It's not the perigee distance that matters as much as the perigee being directly opposite the sun. Perigee in January 2010 was only 15km further away.
I am confused and you are obviously better versed than I.
Was to moon closer to the earth last night than it has been in 18 years?
Yes or No.
No.
It was 10km closer on December 12th 2008. You can check previous years for yourself at http://www.fourmilab.ch/earthview/pacalc.html
In that case we all seem to have been given duff info. Will you tell them or shall I?
What I noticed, over Burnham on Crouch, was the face on the moon. It was sooooooo clear!
It was nice here in Spain as well
Full moon, surely? It's been widely misinterpreted. As I have posted before, what's unusual is that we have a perigee at new moon. Perigees happen every lunar month - thirteen times per year.
Full moon, surely?
