went to the supermarket in lezardrieux a couple of days ago to stock up on wine. thought i'd check first that we could get tramsport back to the marina with our boxes...

yes says the manager, it will cost you 70 euros. (this is for less than 1 km)

two of us queried it in french and english but she continued to insist that was the price and it was cheap. when we said no, we could hear her muttering derogatory things about tight-fisted english.

as we could have hired a car for the day for less than that we were amazed.

anyone had recent experience of the place? (saw sweet lucy in the marina so perhaps jj knows what goes on there)

Bizarre. It was definitely seventy (soixante-dix), was it? In the old days, seventy Francs would have been just about believable, albeit a bit steep.

Doesn't make sense at all. Perhaps they thought you wanted it shipped back to the UK /forums/images/icons/wink.gif. Sounds like that might have been cheaper as well..................

Surely a taxi would have been cheaper ? Next time take bicycle wheels and wherewithall to make one of those thingies you used to steer with baler twine.

In Trebeurden the manager took us and our 8 cartons immediately back to the marina in his car, even making a detour to a viewpoint to see the splendid panorama of the bay. Never been charged for 'livraison' anywhere in Brittany.

conversation went roughly..

she: it will cost seventy euros.
me: soixante dix euros??!!
she: oui
crew: sept zero euros?
she: oui, ce n'est pas cher.

there didn't seem to be any doubt about it.

Merde alors! C'est pas possible! Quel rip-off! etc.

I love France - and even the French, sometimes - but I've experienced far too many attempts to rip me off over the years to regard them with undiluted affection.

the penny drops?

she replied in english that was even worse than my french.

i'm now wondering if when she said 'you pay 70 euros' she meant to say 'if you spend 70 euros...'

doh!

In 29 years in France I would say that the rip-off rate for me has been less than once per year.

By rip-off I mean dishonesty. I'm not speaking about excessive pricing.
