I got my annual pass from my wife to visit 'the boat' two days ago...What a lovely day, hot sunshine, blue sky. Arrived in Maldon at 0800 hrs, as I needed to buy some bits for the day. Had a cup of coffee whilst waiting for the chandlers to open. They kindley opened half an hour early, just for me....thanks to them - 'Marine Store'. Very helpful chaps.

Anyway, arrived at my little 20 footer and wondered where to start. When I bought her two years ago she had been painted very badly, so I decided to repaint her last year. I began to scrape the old antifoul off and as I did, some blue topside paint cane away with it, remarkably easy, leaving an immaculate cream gelcoat beneath. I looked at this strip I had taken off and saw that it contained about 5 layers of old paint. I began scraping furiously and within half an hour one side of the hull was back to gel coat. The rest came off in time. This has left me with a half decent finish. There are various chips and marks but overall it's not bad. Why did this happen?

Very exited by this I am due to revisit and finish the job. I know gel coat can be purchased as a filler, but how do you make it cream? Is there a paint that goes over it, or do you mix the filler with a dye of some sort?

Had a lovely pint, cheese sandwich and pear for lunch.

Thanks

Ben

P.S. Why is everyone from Plastimo miserable on the telephone?

You can purchase a gelcoat repair kit in various colours, which include a cream/biscuit hue. Can't recollect the make but check with your chandler. If you are stuck, email me and I'll get the make for you from the pack on the boat.

Option is to get a toner from one of the fibreglass manufacturers to add to white gelcoat.

Try asking a dentist

I have a chipped front tooth that breaks every now and then and the dentist matches it up really well with a nicotined coloured shade number 32 I think.

I believe the sailing equivalent takes the form of JOTUN GELCOAT filler which have various numbered shades.

p.s. Warning ! You will notice that chandlers only ever have one copy of the shade chart. They will not allow you to take it out the door.
