I got my annual pass from my wife to visit 'the boat' two days ago...What a lovely day, hot sunshine, blue sky. Arrived in Maldon at 0800 hrs, as I needed to buy some bits for the day. Had a cup of coffee whilst waiting for the chandlers to open. They kindley opened half an hour early, just for me....thanks to them - 'Marine Store'. Very helpful chaps.
Anyway, arrived at my little 20 footer and wondered where to start. When I bought her two years ago she had been painted very badly, so I decided to repaint her last year. I began to scrape the old antifoul off and as I did, some blue topside paint cane away with it, remarkably easy, leaving an immaculate cream gelcoat beneath. I looked at this strip I had taken off and saw that it contained about 5 layers of old paint. I began scraping furiously and within half an hour one side of the hull was back to gel coat. The rest came off in time. This has left me with a half decent finish. There are various chips and marks but overall it's not bad. Why did this happen?
Very exited by this I am due to revisit and finish the job. I know gel coat can be purchased as a filler, but how do you make it cream? Is there a paint that goes over it, or do you mix the filler with a dye of some sort?
Had a lovely pint, cheese sandwich and pear for lunch.
Thanks
Ben
P.S. Why is everyone from Plastimo miserable on the telephone?
