What’s wrong with the Grateful Dead?

I’ve recently acquired a taste for this band and have been playing them a lot. In two days my neighbours in the anchorage have moved. The first one honked his horn, asked me to turn it down, which I did, to unacceptably low levels (to me). He moved anyway. The second pitched up a day later. She then stood, hands on hips for ages, looking quite unhappy at me, then upped anchor and bogged off. I’ve never had this before, it’s got to be more than a coincidence. Is the Grateful Dead really that bad?

I enjoyed Yes, Def Leppard - few others appreciate them. I'd agree music should be enjoyed loud - I also enjoy pipes, bagpipes.

You need to get out more and move your cruising ground, Tasmania, Patagonia, Northern Norway, NW Passage - few would complain.

Saw the Dead live once, was a great night but I was suitably sh1tfaced so, to be honest, it could have been Nana Mouskouri up there for all I cared.
For anyone new to ‘em, ‘Box of Rain’ is a masterpiece.

You could of course get a bluetooth pair of headphones like my wife did for me, they were brilliant in the marina when i was stripping treadmaster off the deck complete silence for everyone else other than some scraping noises, me i am listening full blast to the best Ibiza trance dance hits from 20 years ago ???

Seriously, neighbour from hell, most people prefer a tranquil spot to anchor in.
NO music loud enough to be heard by neighboring boats is acceptable, whatever the genre. (except perhaps the distant sound of bagpipes)
Have some consideration for others!

Totally agree with that, loud music does nothing but ruin it for anybody else who happens to be there. Use headphones please...

Loud music and anchorages are for most of us mutually exclusive and a big no-no. I like to listen to Opera, so use headphones, as I am absolutely certain few others nearby would enjoy my particular taste in the singing arts!

Some years ago anchored in a crowded Newtown River, IOW, a very large Gin palace (I use that term advisedly, not derogatorily) pulled in. To most people's horror, they started up an extremely powerful disco on board and danced into the night. About 2.00am the Newtown harbour msaster came down to try and deal with it, but as the were outside the river he had no jurisdiction. Reportedly he couldnt get anyones attention on board anyway. In the next few weeks there were a series of complaints down the coast as this party boat pulled in to entertain the local population, often until 3 - 4 in the morning.

No, sorry, but that is antisocial behaviour mega-plus in most peoples books.

It used to be that those with no consideration for others who blasted out music were the young.

Seems to be the elderly are at it now too......

There's a nautical side to the Dead. I read an interview with Jerry Garcia, who said creating a Dead studio album was like constructing a ship in a bottle, whereas a Dead live performance was like being in a row boat out on the ocean.

That interview was in the early eighties, when it had suddenly became hip for some of the up-and-coming bands of the time to play 20 or 25 minute sets. He was questioned about it and Garcia said he couldn't understand it: they loved playing music, and why would you want to stop when you'd only just got started? (The Dead were still doing 4 hour sets!).

A few years earlier than that some friends were going up to London on their motorbike (Velocette MSS!) to see the Dead. They had an accident on their way into London and came off the bike, went to hospital A&E, got patched up and released, finally made it to the venue bloodied and bandaged. The Dead were still playing, and continued for a good couple of hours more!

There's hope for you yet! :D

But as you noticed, it is an acquired taste. And one less likely to be acquired through forced exposure (especially to some of the more way out live stuff!).

For those who are still missing out but willing to give it a try, their studio albums are probably most immediately accessible - all exquisitely put together, each very different. Fred mentions the track 'Box of Rain'. The album that is from, 'American Beauty', is an absolute classic, and highly recommended.

Fixed that for you!

Once had the slightly weird experience of hearing the distant sound of bagpipes on Wareham's high street! Turned out to be a colleague of mine practicing.

I once moored below Urquart Castle on Loch Ness.

After a while bagpipes struck up in the car park above. We deduced it was to 'welcome' the arrival of a coach load of tourists. Mildly amusing and entertaining.

Until we realised that there were a seemingly never ending succession of coaches at brief intervals, each of them announced by these blessed pipes (and the same tune IIRC). Very tedious.

Fortunately, the torture was suspended by nightfall. We slept soundly, and departed hastily in the morning before it could all kick off again.

A friend who mainly boats in Scotland plays the pipes from his loudspeakers from time to time. His avatar when he posted on here was him strangling them from a position at the bow. There's no escape.

Jerry Garcia was a great jazz blues guitarist and Grateful Dead created brilliant music which i have been listening to since the late 60's. I was in San Francisco a few years ago, their music was played in many pubs. But, as always, music is down to personal taste and keeping music to yourself, for your ears only, is the best approach.

We did go to a festival and had just decided to go home, I was just drinking up my pint when the Peatbog Faeries came on and did a live set, they play the pipes they had the entire site on their feet dancing and cheering along, they were a lot of fun live.
