What’s the weather like where you are

I’m just back from a glorious week of skiing near Saalbach in Austria. 6 days of blue skies and sunshine. It’s now dull and raining in Ireland

Today is starting out with freezing fog, it was -3c when we got home last night from visiting friends in Brussels, thermometer is reading -2c just now.
Solar panels are not generating any leccy either which is not helpful.

At least it is 4c in the boat just now

Solar panels ... my 13KW array is only producing max 0.5 average these days and insufficient to charge up my backup Battery storage ..

I worry that the battery storage may not charge up once solar really starts working again ... but service guy says don't worry !!!

Producing about 500W above what the house is consuming at the moment, we have 7.6kW across 32 panels.

When we had the analogue electric meter, which could run backwards, at the end of the year the end result came out at zero, now with a digital meter it does not run back so we have to pay a higher charge for what we consumed and we get almost nothing for energy we put on the net. As the digital meter has only just been fitted we are still trying to balance our load to end at a zero consumption.

From February onwards we produce a good bit more than we consume, so we are looking in to getting batteries to balance out the day's generation/consumption. During the summer most will be consumed by the swimming pool filtering and heating.

Batteries are taxed here so it is not a no brainer in getting a battery pack, Solar panels are also taxed at about €100 per kW capacity of the panels, officially our panels are rated at 6.5kW so we pay €650 per year just to have solar panels.

This is also the reason that friends have a good solar array on their boat with battery storage, they do their laundry etc. on the boat and do not take any electricity from the net, those panels and batteries are not taxed like they would be if they were installed at their house.

Called my Solar Service guy and we reset the Hybrid Inverter and Battery .... now battery receives charge when house demand is lower than total available .... phew !!

With regard to battery storage - Latvia changed the rules about 3-4 yrs ago - rstricting the capacity that can be stored - along with the size of array. Basically State Electric Co was losing business as people put in large arrays and huge battery storage .... unfortunately - I came in just a bit too late to have what I wanted !!

When we put in the panels there was a 9kW limit for domestic panels. the 32 panels was the maximum we could put on the space available on the roof.
We were supposed to get a feed in tariff for 20 years of €250 for each MWh produced, that stopped when we got the digital meter fitted, they have now just paid for themselves took almost 14 years though

It’s pissing down here in Torbay , there must have been upto 12 boats that snapped ropes , but the MDL team did a sterling job roping back up . The down side they use bright yellow rope so you are embarrassed when you get to your boat.

I haven’t been in Bangor since I was a wee lad. Used to love Pickie pool and the amusements.
Great summers then!
The poor ol place is needing some love. The promenade infront of Queens Parade is being redone at the mo.. Don't ask why, and Pickie is due to be redone again next year but Queens Parade is derelict and the Flagship Centre, Royal Hotel the same.. Not a bad marina but the town/city is looking very tired at the mo sadly.

I watched the icy sea view and the ship sailing through the ice. I am waiting for spring and dreaming of the coming season.IMG_20260131_101023.jpg
