Sorry, don't get this. There is no consolation prize for coming second! It may happen that during an Offshore exam, the examiner could suggest altering the exam to Coastal. But I've never heard of it the other way around.

The scheme has been developed over 84 years. 'They' are good at it!

However I do know that RYA training are always open to suggestions by email. It would be nice if you could post any response?

Also there are examiners who post here occasionally. They will know the rules.
Not really a consolation prize. We both understand that the 'standard' for Offshore is higher than Coastal. If a candidate does not demonstrate the skills and knowledge to pass Offshore, but they would pass the Coastal criteria. Currently, they go away empty handed! I have seen that happen and having spoke to several examiners on the topic I am informed they have no flexibility in the awarding of YM; the candidate elects to do an exam and you are assessed on that.

It would be interesting to hear if the RYA Training Department have changed the rules in the last 18 months.

I did the coastal skipper practical week with the intention of doing the cs exam at the weekend but was persuaded to go for ym offshore instead. I remember the instructor saying "this examiner" would likely award a cs pass if not quite up to ym standard. This was back in the 90s and it sounded like some examiners were more flexible than others.

They should have special ensigns for those with Yachtmaster Ocean.

Rather than reflecting how rich you are (tho’ reasonable for admirals!)
