Not really a consolation prize. We both understand that the 'standard' for Offshore is higher than Coastal. If a candidate does not demonstrate the skills and knowledge to pass Offshore, but they would pass the Coastal criteria. Currently, they go away empty handed! I have seen that happen and having spoke to several examiners on the topic I am informed they have no flexibility in the awarding of YM; the candidate elects to do an exam and you are assessed on that.Sorry, don't get this. There is no consolation prize for coming second! It may happen that during an Offshore exam, the examiner could suggest altering the exam to Coastal. But I've never heard of it the other way around.
The scheme has been developed over 84 years. 'They' are good at it!
However I do know that RYA training are always open to suggestions by email. It would be nice if you could post any response?
Also there are examiners who post here occasionally. They will know the rules.
It would be interesting to hear if the RYA Training Department have changed the rules in the last 18 months.
