Before I go totally into a new job....

The Whale Gulper pump is fine but it is pumping air and any new liquids that arrive into the system from the sink simply when the pump is running redirects it to the shower tray which begins to fill up.

Do I need to put water into the pipes or is there a method of priming the system?

There are two inlets into the grey tank shower and sink. The outlet is at the bottom which is lead to the whale gulper and then out. It's worked perfectly up until now so I imagine it's an air lock because the tank is full any thoughts.

A Gulper is a positive displacement pump, so it will prime itself up to a theoretical height of 32 feet above the water! I suggest the suction valve has failed or has a foreign body across the seat. I don't understand your description of the system so it might possibly be something else, but it is not a suction air lock.

Agreed. Check the condition of the valves - chances are they either need replacing or something's jammed in them.

Thanks to you both. Agreed.

I hoped I would not have to get my hands dirty but seems this is the case. A classic "I'll help out a friend" offer that turns into a job.
