Does anyone know whether the rudder on a Renown can be dropped without raising the boat when it is standing on it's keel ?

G'day Alan,
Had the same problem some years back, not a Westerly though, we dug a hole to drop the rudder into, common practice in most yards, is this an option?

No. You have to dig a hole to allow at least 15 inches below keel so that the shaft can clear the bearing. Try to get the boat laid up with blocks under the keel to save a few inches of digging.

Did this job on my Westerly Pentland, easy to do on pentland as boat is bilge keel, just jacked up the stern and blocked the bilge keels, still had to dig a bit of hole. The seal is a standard type lip seal which you can get from any good supplier, the size is on the shoulder and will give you the OD ID and the depth of the seal, can't remember what the spring material is so best to contact the Westerly Assc.
PS rudder is heavy so I fitted a jack under it and slowy lowered it into the hole.
Not sure why you want to remove it completey as I think you can change the lip seal with just lowering thge rudder enough to get the old seal out. Again best to look at the WOA web site.

Just a further thought about your keel. If you measure the inside stock dimension, which i think is about 300 to 400 mm and then measure the distance from the base of the rudder to the ground, you will be able to work out if you need to dig a hole. If you are a one man band PBO as many of us are, you should consider a jack uner the rudder to ensure it is lowered slowly.
