On Friday I catch the overnight ferry to St Malo to start a week's cruise back to Gosport (whether the other owner's have got the boat there in the first place in this weather is another matter !)

When I have doen this trip before I have always set off westwards to Sy Quay Portrieux, then Pampol then Lezardrieux then Guernsey then Alderney and back to IoW.

This time I was considering going east then north up the Cherbourg peninsular to Granville then Jersey then Guernsey etc.

My question is what suitable port is there north of Granville. All my reference books are with the other owners already on board. Or does the forum think the westabout route is better/more interesting.

The boat is a bilge keeled 29 footer and this will be the first time in France with SWMBO.

All views welcome!

We returned from The Rance this year via St Helier, Carteret , Dielette and Cherbourg (for Hypermarket). Carteret sill makes it difficult to hit the Alderney race at the correct time, hence a stop in Dielette.
Both places very pleasant, especially Carteret, but avoid weekend because its full of Jerseyites then.

We think its a very underrated coast. North of Granville (which is itself very pleasant) there is Carteret - we went for the first time this year and loved it. Apparently it can get crowded at weekends, you may be rafting on the visitors pontoon, but well worth it IMHO.

Then Dielette, which is a massive concrete marina, but there is miles of empty beach to the north, good facilities, excellent moules/frites on the dock, and some good places to eat locally. Very friendly harbourmaster too.

You are then well positioned for Alderney or even straight through the Race to go home - or Cherbourg.

Re: Cherbourg warning.

Last year there was a discussion here about a threatening feeling late night in some of the smaller streets en-route back to the marina. Some regulars thought this was a new and worrying trend at Cherbourg.

Well things are getting worse. Two weeks ago swmbo got back to my boat in a distressed state at 4:30pm after a solo shopping trip in the town center. Some young guy had followed her through the park in his car, he then jumped out and tried to force a conversation. He claimed to want to know the time but when this was provided he kept following.

An hour later we cleared out as the tide was right for St Vaast. While claiming a refund for the prepaid night I described events to the young woman at the marina office... "it has happened to me as well" was the reply.
