Just ordered something from West Marine in California.

The amazing thing is that they have a toll-free line for UK customers:

0800 895 473

I know you can order over the web, but it's nice to talk to a human and be sure that your order has gone through.

Use them quite a lot, even with carriage they are good value if you are buying a bundle of low cost items.

Boatfix also good - they have a lawrence colour plotter for £250 at current exchange rate.

Usually do it on-line but I have also noticed the toll free number

Very efficient - and fast delivery to UK. Customs duty however may turn up some months later, when you think you have got away with it!

Those prices for the garmin gps units look very attractive...are there any issues with using us sourced nav gear in the uk? I know that the vhf sets have a tag(?) to indicate that they were sourced outside the uk and are not supposed to be used permenantly within our shores, or so my vhf instructor told us.

Stinks of price fixing to me !!!!

The garmin gps sets will have the US basemap and not the European one, but if you buy the charting software for the UK, then it should overwrite the base map - or that is how I understand it..........
Be very careful of teh DSC VHF radios - they are cheap, several are sold on Ebay in the UK - but they DO NOT COMPLY with UK & EU regs and the DSC function is not compliant again. In particular the Uniden range and the Icom 402S. There has been a lot of messages about this on the form.
I understood the authorities were going to stop them being sold on ebay but nothings happened!

Yes . . . you're right of course.

So it's 2pm - 2am GMT

(But remember to adjust for BST in a few weeks time- can't wait to get into the unshaded section of the tide tables :)

Re: West Marine time zone

So far as I remember from my globetrotting, the USA change their clocks same weekend as us generally.

Re: West Marine time zone

Daylight Saving Time begins for most of the United States at 2 a.m. on the first Sunday of April. Time reverts to standard time at 2 a.m. on the last Sunday of October. In the U.S., each time zone switches at a different time.

In the European Union, Summer Time begins and ends at 1 am Universal Time (Greenwich Mean Time). It starts the last Sunday in March, and ends the last Sunday in October. In the EU, all time zones change at the same moment.

So there's a week at the end of March/beginning of April when we are on Summer time and the USA isn't, otherwise you are quite correct.

Generally however I think this is a fairly pointless offshoot of the original thread . . . it's a toll free number, so the worst that will happen is that you will get an answering machine . . . I called at 8pm, which suited me and West Marine perfectly.

They seem to be completely integrated as far as store membership cards are concerned. i.e. you can get discount at WM with a B-US card and vice versa. WM did not acquire B-US's other services like insurance, for inst.

BTW, look getfeetwet.com for GPS deals. One prob is that the current Garmin $100 rebate is only valid for US residents.
