Only reason for UK cruise this year was the new crew - one springer spanial puppy (6 months) too young to be left with others.
The west country does not deserve our attention, and franckly next time - if there was one - I would eat on board more as most of the food was - shall we say - better not eat. - One exception - Shipwrights in Helford. However Helford was the biggest joke in so far as facilities were negligible for their outrageous charges.
Hi - actually Helford is one of my favourites, I know the sailing club - wish I had known about the new chef - but would have had a problem with the dog.
If you look at the rates charged they are all over the place - if quoted in feet - there are different charges - ie £21 from 38 feet, if quoted in meters £21 for 13 meters. so a bit of a strange pricing structure.
I am not actually sure what to say - I would like to come to the west country - but I don't like being over charged, and would also like to have reliable decent eating - now Helford does tick that last box - I always enjoy the Shipwrights. I don't know if there will be a next time, as France provides a better "experiance".
As for St Mawes - that won't be on my list - which will not be a problem as our experience of eating at the Idle Rocks was not an experiance I would repeat. Has quite a few similarities to Fawlty Towers! and I would like some food with my meal!
At those prices, I'd need a second mortgage for 57 feet!
Funny innit, I've never been charged anywhere in the meddy for anchoring.
Often free moorings if you use the town, simple really, attract folk to your town and bars/restaurants.
Free moorings/pontoon in France, Greece, turkey, if you use the restaurant that owns the pontoon mooring etc.
Services in the moorings, a small boat with fresh bread and croisants etc.
Ah well, never mind, no intentions of coming back to UK waters in the near or distant future.
We visited in June, and again experienced a warm and friendly welcome, bit of a chat, some good humour, and first class food served with a cheery attitude. All other facilities first rate.
Do call in, it will help them, and is certainly a better environment than the pub you have to walk past to get there, unless you like breathing in chip fat. (everybody has to have something to rant about)
Hi - agree with you - I love the Helford - yes very welcoming - but the charges are really OTT, especially as you cannot anchor anywhere near anymore! Anchoring is free, but actually I would expect to pay something/ - Beualieu is £5.00 anchored or moored - thats the solent - or £18 on trotts showers etc. Just a comparison.
France is catching on fast, over £20 for 10m at Lezardrieux now, £15 to swing on a buoy. Even the ungodly swinging moorings off Roscoff are now charged...
For good value I would nominate Falmouth Yacht Haven where we paid £20 overnight for a 10m cat and for bad value I would nominate the Falmouith Yacht Haven for £8 for a two-hour short term stop over (although that did include use of showers and loos).
We also valued £8 for a buoy off the Smugglers Cottage at Tolverne up the River Fal, and are grateful to the Newton Ferrers Harbour Maaster for sorting out a buoy for us on their busiest day of the year and still only charging the normal £15 fee.
Other recent fees include: River Avon free; Helford £11 (and an excellent run ashore to the sailing club and its spectacular views (but SWMBO turned her nose up at the 'schoolgirl' showers); £15 in Fowey; Falmouth anchorage free (but dragged!); various other small anchorages free.
11 Euros 25 - that's £7.87 a night with water and electricity (50 cents lasted all night). Showers & WCs along the quayside. Lovely old town and very quiet.
