West country cruise , tips please

I agree with most of the opinions expressed here.

On the Tamar you might stop at Saltash. There are a few pubs and particulalry good one for food just under Brunel's bridge. Plenty of plaves to drop the hook a few hundred yards above the bridges.

Salcombe is expensive (relatively speaking) but anchoring in the Bag and going with the dinghy up to Kingsbridge is worth the anchoring fee.

Awful lot of anti Salcombe feeling on here! I haven't been for a good few years, and have always enjoyed it in the past. What has changed so massively recently?

I think if I was planning a west country cruise now I'd probably go, just to see what all the fuss is about!

I think that's the point, there are no facilities there at all, but they charge you huge prices as if there were, so you just have the 'benefit' of looking at the scenery for your money. Pleasant, but definitely not worth it for us. Have never returned after being hassled for money when actually in the process of anchoring over 20 years ago.

Hope you enjoy your visit; I suspect there'll be lots of room there (except for holiday homes and trippers) in the future unless someone makes some effective decisions to save the place from finally becoming a ghost town. What a waste!!

And if you really enjoy exploring, take the dinghy on the rising tide right up to Gunnislake - its like the Amazon jungle in places with steep cliffs and old mines everywhere. Kids will love it. Beware of sill at Gunnislake.

...and if you don't fancy using your dinghy there is a regular ferry between Cotehele and Calstock and occasional boat "cruises" to Morwellham in the delightfully named launch Gloria usually skippered by Josh - a very experienced marine engineer. Both of these are tide dependent.

Nothing like some real up to the minute information hey /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

We stayed up at the bag a few weeks ago. Lovely and quiet, and some fantastic walking. Pubs seemed to range from trendy to basic...

Ok it was a bit expensive in general but not really worthy of the abuse the place has received. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Reporting as of two weeks ago:

Plymouth - roll on by, nothing to commend the town or facilities, highest charges in the west, and uncomfortable berth.

Dartmouth - first class in every respect. A jewel.

Falmouth - basic facilities at the visitors' marina, mostly rafting, but easy access to nice village and good eating (try the Hut) Local train service to Truro -nice trip.. go for a real pasty at Rowe's in the centre of town: memorable! (you'll see Ginsters pasties in a different light thereafter..)

Or take one of the mid river pontoons beyond Carrick Roads for peaceful night in unmatched beauty, for just £10 any length! Go beyond Windsor Castle ship for up river pontoon offering shorter trip to landing pontoon -dinghy ashore to nice pub at Malpas. Stay always in centre of river to avoid mud shallows, and watch out for King Harry Ferry.

Newlyn - Warning - no water at LW in harbour on further side of pontoon otherwise reserved for fishing boats. Bottom is ROCK! No washing facilites to mention, low key eating in village. Go there in emergency, and prepare to raft.

Penzance - gate limited access (-2 to +1) but free moorings outside whilst waiting. ( Take refuge in Newlyn, 5 minutes away if necessary.) Nice place with good access to Cornish attractions - short train trip to St Ives etc, range of eating (try the Dolphin on quayside), shops etc, through train connection 5 minutes walk from port. Very helpful staff and 3rd night free! (Puts Plymouth severely in its proper place!)
