No offence taken, but I would say that if my prioriries were different to anyone else, it probably has no bearing on my choice of petrol over diesel engine. It just so happened that the boat that best suited my needs at the time was petrol powered.
That being said, I'm fairly handy and am happy to take on most jobs myself and through this and other forums have leaned a lot, done a lot and saved a lot. With the relative high cost of engine servicing I would also like to do my own servicing, and I for one would find a petrol engine maintenance course highly valuable and would definitely go on one if it were available. Apart from the cost saving, I would also feel happier in the knowledge that I would not only know what was done, but that it was done properly.
This is as much with safety in mind as economy, because I'd be far more comfortable knowing that if something went wrong that I'd be capable of fixing it whilst out of reach of professional services.
