Well Thats Its Now

Well the season is over for us now, we were lifted out on monday.

We tend to lift out ever 2 years and leave on hard standing for 4 months in the hope that it will do the hull good and dry out.

Not been a bad season, 140 hours, with 120 nights on board

Unusual mystery tour holiday, but feel like we have not been so far this year

All I can say is roll on next season, hope we have some decent weather .

What are other people doing, do they believe that its good to have the boat lifted out and leave for a while ? are you staying in ?

Will miss the usual trip up the river on christmas day and New Years day, but better get some family visits in and out of the way before next season starts

I come out next weekend, for first time in 3 years and I'm not sure I've made the right decision! I don't get many winter trips, but I do have a few and they are a huge boost to the system. Mostly I try to choose good weather, but it doesn't matter if I get it wrong, it is still a great treat to batter up & down the Straits in howling wind & rain provided you are well wrapped up.

I will still be able to stop on board, but it will be cold, the bog won't work & it will not be bobbing up & down. Ah, well.

Ye I know the feeling, only been out 3 days and missing it already, like you we can stay onboard, but the boat is tilting backwards so sleeping on it will be fun.

Know what you mean about winter, its great cruising when nobody is about, and there are always some nice days over winter.

I feel like a caravan owner now

We are dry berthed anyway, but do use her all year round. To be honest, we are as likely to go out on a good sunny day in January as we are in June. It is so quiet over the winter - and as Searush says, gives a huge boost to our spirits. One of my most memorable trips was a few days after Christmas a couple of years ago. Flat calm sea, beautiful sunny day and surrounded by approx. 20 dolphins for half an hour with not another boat in sight. Bliss!

Never thought about leaving her in the water but might be tempted next year.

I've decided to take her out next week, clean her up, put on winter cover, change oils etc. (heater and dehumidifier already working)

However, the beauty about only owning a dinky little S23 on a trailer, is that if I wake up early on a fine Saturday morning... she can be in the water within the hour with the engine's tickign over /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

M Farters not been out for ten years, well apart from having her bottom done. The heating can cope with anything chucked at her, so winter makes little difference. Just might not go as far, thats all.

Would be nice to have 2 years in but my anodes would never last that long (Volvo legs).
My jobs list that I can`t do afloat is mounting so I think I`ll be out within the next few weeks.

Same here, bar the 18 month scrub and a/f, change anodes, back in as quickly as possible, that's what they are made for.

why take it out....for drying?well thats for someone else benefit in 15 years time,bad weather....?most of that seems to arrive in the summer.........we keep it in and use it when suits over the wintertime,possibly some of the best days all year,we lift every second year for four/six weeks and polish,antifoul the hull ,topsides twice a yearetc,etc and bang it back in and use it. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Mabe is a myth ref drying hull out, lots of people have differant views on it.

Hi Ian,
After last winter's marathon engine overhaul we are staying in for most of the winter. Probaly come out for a couple of weeks in Feb time for anti-foul, anodes etc.

Don't think it's a myth about drying out - it takes time though!!

We've stayed in for the last 2 winters and had some lovely trips but in all honesty, not that many. However, staying in is far cheaper for us than laying up, though that's what we'll be doing this year.
There are a number of little things that need checking/repairing and we'll probably antifoul this year, plus the leg wants servicing.
Price for being able to do this is £120 each way for towing from mooring, lift out and blocking up. I offered to forego the tows but was told that that was not allowed as the approach channel is very narrow /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif .
I really should have told the lady that I've been to this boatyard many times, on our boat, including approximately 5 mins earlier, without recourse to either a pilot or a tow. At the time I couldn't be bothered as I'd have probably lost my temper.

Yet another devious practice from so called marine professionals.

Then of course there's the £32 per wk. storage fee.

If we were to stay afloat it would have cost us about £300 for the mooring for 6 months.
