Well, I've gone and bought a Karcher!

The guy on the boat next to us used a pressure washer to clean his boat the other weekend.
Before he started, his boat was really filthy, covered in green and general dirt after the winter.
When he'd finished it came up really well, and looked much better.
Our boat was really filthy, covered in all the muck he'd just transferred over.

Pressure washers are really good at transferring all the dirt to the nearby area. Everything gets covered.
You end up not only cleaning what you intended to, but all around it too.

Personally I think they're too agressive for use on a boat in normal circumstances.
An occasional wash with just water, a cloth, and a good scrubbing brush on the stubborn bits works fine for us.

I also mentioned Patio Magic. I painted (not sprayed) the deck the other day, and so far as I know, there is very little in the way of living organisms on the concrete hard surrounding my boat. Facetiousness apart, I think that most of us are aware of its potential toxicity, and as a member of Essex wildlife, this is not something I would wish to ignore. I do believe, though, that when carefully applied, there is negligible run-off into the environment. My usual routine is to avoid using it when there is a risk of rain within 24hrs, and I feel fairly confident that this gives sufficient time for the chemicals to bind or soak into the wood.

As the person who mentioned Patio Magic I feel a response is warranted.

There is a very clear warning about not splashing it on to surrounding plants when applying it. Oh and don't get it in your eyes or drink it.

Then wash your hands.

NONE of the solution goes near the water. It soaks directly into the deck.

After that? I don't know*** but if it is as toxic as you fear once it has dried, there would be dead children and animals scattering the patios of the UK.

I DO hope that you have a portapotti, recycle your oily exhaust water and don't use antifoul.

You may be right though. I've not seen a seahorse since I applied the stuff.

Thank you for your contact.

The active ingredients have no residual effect after they have dried so can be re-applied when required..

I'm afraid this is an entirely selfish irresponsible attitude that should be condemned by every right thinking individual that loves Nature & the environment.
The notion that dangerous chemicals will not be washed off the deck three feet above water level when pressure washed while DDT was banned because it washed off farmers fields is simply ludicrous.

I would only recommend using cilit bang in a yard away from the river for initial cleaning of gunk and crap that is the norm on a restoration project thats been sitting around. I have starbrite for on water use.

I'm afraid this is an entirely irrelevant response that should be ignored by every person that can read a thread and understand not only the timeline of events but also the extent of the perceived problem.

If you’re not too breathless from trying to control your high horse you would see that the Patio Magic was put on AFTER the Karcher was used NOT washed off afterwards as you state.

You would read that there was NO runoff at the time of application.

You would read that when the solution has dried it is non-toxic as explained by the fact that animals and children are free to play on the now cleaned patio.Or boat deck.

As confirmed by the company that makes the Aldi alternative product. But what do they know?

Anyway, to you:

Portapotti?

Recycled engine water? … you wouldn’t want THAT in a fishtank would you?

Use antifouling? You know, the stuff that is toxic?

And presuming you scrub your boat where does the runoff go?

Picked up any beer cans that the kids have scattered around your world? It WOULD make a difference you know. Carrier bag a time ... think how good you'd feel.

I do that already mate, picking up other peoples rubbish.....& having to deal with it ;)

I am happy with the contribution I make to the nature & wildlife that I love how about you?

The fact is you wer'nt the only one to talk about using patio magic & yours was'nt the original post I picked up on ;) I have just had to deal with your guilty conscience ever since.

The fact is if you use one of those formulas (propriety brand I should think is irrelevant) you are putting chemicals into an environment where there is a very strong warning against doing any such thing.Ignore it if you will but rambling on about other forms of pollution by way of a distraction does not really cut it now does it?

The notion that you use patio magic after power washing & it dos'nt eventually find it's way back into the water is pure tripe.Take a look outside,it's peeing down with rain.Where do you think the run off goes? I doubt very much that it is harmless & until I see independent tests about the consequences I am not so naive as to just swallow the manufacturer & promoters claims, convenient though it would be for you :)

PS: I hav'nt used anti- fouling paint since about 2010.Though I will agree that the price for such perfection is high. :D

Well mate it's pretty pointless arguing with someone who thinks that the truth is tripe.

The fact that the active chemical in PM has no residual effect is lost on you, or you just chose to ignore it to suit your agenda.

Anyway you've left me with a lovely image of your Eco-warrior credentials causing you actually walk your newly acquired bike round your little wood as you collect discarded beer cans mumbling about "kids today"

I hate to think of the emissions caused by production and transport of your new bike when there are so many second hand ones around but you seem very selective with regard to what is right and wrong.

Oh, Patio Magic ... there is no residual effect once it's dried.

I've only said that a few times but you seem capable of ignoring what doesn't suit your argument.

Patio Magic ceases to be toxic to marine life soon after it dries and weathers. It should only be applied if the forecast is for several dry days to follow and application should take care to avoid run-off. Its toxicity is pretty specific - to mammals, it is pretty harmless - the active ingredient is used in a variety of human medications - admittedly at lower dosage than you would apply to your deck!

I would like to believe that this is the case. Do you have any reference for this? I have looked at some data sheets but they are not particularly helpful.

If you are prepared to ignore the warning on the back of (at least the ALDI stuff) "very toxic to aquatic life" & instead believe a casual statement that obviously is'nt independent in order to justify your actions that is up to you.I prefer to er' on the side of caution.

I would love to use that stuff on my boat at least to remove the weed marks around the water line that are very hard to remove by hand (that's why I bought some) + to remove mould that builds up inside my boat over winter but I value the wildlife & environment around here so highly I don't want to risk it.......each to his own.

As for your additional rant. The bike was given to me by my neighbour rather than throw it out so along with your 'concerns' about the anti-fouling paint I use you ar'nt having a very good day are you really :D

When I see independent evidence that that Patio Magic stuff is completely harmless as you say then I will be more than happy to use it :encouragement:

Hi John,

Doff manufacture the equivalent product sold by Aldi

http://www.doffgarden.co.uk

I asked them about toxity once the product was dry.

They replied:

"Thank you for your contact.

The active ingredients have no residual effect after they have dried"

You may chose to believe this or not.

I do.

And now a reply from Brinton Products, the manufacturers of Patio Magic

"Once the product has completely dried/evaporated there
will be no residual hazardous toxicity; the active residues absorb extremely
tightly to the surface and become immobile, and will not be dislodged by
physical action or rain"

I wonder if both companies would be interested to read the libel being written here. Quite serious stuff really.

Despite the threats from the op I still shant be using it on my boat. The label on the container is sufficiently alarming for me not to risk it on the local wildlife & anyway why would you if as the op says the Karcher does such a splendid job just on it's own? The less chemicals I am responcible for pumping into the environment the better I feel
