After years of various size and resistance (hard/soft) deck brushes that clang into cleats, tracks and toerails, with buckets of soapy water falling over, recalcitrant hosepipes and generally a job that needed doing three times to get in all the nooks, crannies and diamond pattern, I've taken the plunge.

I read all the comments on here first but decided to ignore the (much valued but) negative ones given the following:

It only cost £47.32 (€59)

It has a 3 year warranty in France ... 2 years in the UK. Hmm.

It included £34 worth of extras. Foam sprayer, shampoo and brush.

http://www.tesco.com/direct/diy-car/pressure-washer-attachments/cat14090032.cat?catId=4294790743&

It is for deck washing only

If it dies in the third year I get a replacement.

If it dies just after its third year it has cost just £16 a year and I still have the free extras plus whatever hasn't failed.

If someone had offered to clean my deck for only £16 I would have paid them and got a deckchair out to watch.

I read all the reviews ... Reevo, Tesco etc.

The Tesco ones were eye-opening, >1200 4/5 stars and even some of the the 3 star reviews should have been higher:

"Attachments can be expensive, and the standard attachments are probably good enough for day to day application"

"I bought this model but in hindsight wish I had bought the more expensive model with attachments"

"Purchased this for my dad as a bday present, he was happy and it worked a treat"

3 stars ??

And only 16 1 and 2 stars?

But with a degree of trepidation I fired it up and tried the different attachments.

The deck was cleaned using the Dirt Buster spray lance and the ingrained dirt lifted IMMEDIATELY.

It was so good that it was actually a pleasure to use ... if I handed it to Mrs Bav to "just do that bit", it was gone! Cup of tea in hand off she'd disappear down the side deck giggling. Perhaps I should take her out more :D

The teak was cleaned by applying the included foam in the Foam Sprayer but tbh that is the only time a bucket of soapy water could have been as useful. I then sprayed off all the dirt from about a 3 feet distance and the wood was undamaged.

I must now admit to being a bit confused. So much negativity on this forum and I DO respect the opinions of many of the posters BUT most of the external reviews are mega-favourable. OK, one guy cracked the casing ... what, so it just crumbled or did he drop it? Who knows?

Use it to clean under the boat? Don't think so, probably the spray isn't broad enough for that but we never once had to slow down or stop to remove stubborn stains. It was just a gentle sweep from side to side, sometimes with tea in hand and the end result is remarkable.

Now it's just a quick slosh over with "Starbrite Deck Cleaner with PTFE" and a polish of the non-walky bits and the job is done.

Guestimating 2 hours total from a war zone to looking (almost) like new. Including tea breaks

Oh, nearly forgot, SO easy to store.

If you get bored the clean bit starts at 2.47.

Any dirt you may see is runoff or footprints.

I'm currently uploading a before and after video, I'll link to it later ... if you get bored the clean bit starts at 2.47.

When you cleaned your teak deck, did you apply along the strips or across them ?

Have you experienced any dislodgement of the black caulking at all ?

Never clean along, always across. I've read that you can dislodge the softer wood if you go along the grain.

I was very hesitant to use the Karcher on teak but started waaay back and really just used it like a hose on high pressure spray gun setting but tap pressure. The shampoo lifted the dirt and it literally just poured off.

I've had no dislodgement of the caulking but whenever we wipe the teak down I get an annoying black smear from the edges.

15 years in all weathers I guess I can expect some deg.

Patio Magic later today !! :)

I would be wary of using a jet washer on teak for anything more than "hosing off" whatever you have used for cleaning, though I haven't used detergents on mine for the fourteen years of so that I have used fungicide/algicides like Patio Magic. My boat and my Karcher haven't yet been introduced.

Mr + Mrs Bav,

Dirty DC!!!

Shame on you for leaving her like that!

But now you have redeemed yourselves, looks 100% better.

The truth behind issues with Karcher machines is that they are actually very good, but you must make sure of the following:

NEVER turn the motor on without water flow through the pump first. Not well known, but Karcher only have a 15 minute "Run dry" time (and that is a collective total time, not 15 minutes each day or week) So always ensure that the water supply is turned on first and then when it is, depress the lance trigger to eliminate any air in the pump head.

NEVER leave a pressure washer anywhere the temperature drops below freezing. Pump head WILL crack if frozen out and then the price of a replacement head outweighs cost of a new unit. Freezing out the machine will invalidate the warranty and Karcher can tell if the unit has failed due to frost damage.

ALWAYS use with a RCD and if using an extension power reel, uncoil all the cable.

After using chemical through the machine, flush out with clean water or disconnect chemical supply and run fresh water through unit.

The plastic which Karcher use is a bit flimsy on the domestic machines, the commercial ones are a lot better. I have a 30 year old commercial unit and it works much better than a 2 year old top of the range K7 500 I have. But nothing beats my petrol one!!!

Have fun both of you. xx

Ta Mike. I actually thought you'd give me a b@ll ocking for ignoring your previous anti-posts :D but the points you make are all valid.

Today I cleaned the two adjacent pontoons and two random yachts. Really love it.

I believe black smearing is due to quality or make of caulk originally fitted but if you get fed up with stick caulk and decide to recall the cockpit floor the problem seems reduced . I'm not saying yours needs recaulking but IMHO the original caulk was not the best around

Bought a VAX friday from Argos £55 after having to give back a Karcher I borrowed from a friend The Vax is 1800w where the Karcher is only 1400w tho I did like the Karcher and I had only seen them at £99

Try using Cillit Bang Limescale and shine: Spray the Deck to get it wet, Spray Some Cillit Bang, Give it a Quick Swirl Around with a Brush then Powerwash off.................Results are amazing!!!!

Regards

Keep an eye out on the Karcher Outlet site on the internet. They have different deals on their models. I bought a K2 compact from there a couple of months ago for £30. They sell them as Refurbished / end of line and come in a plain box, but mine looked brand new. Brilliant for that price so I also bought a 6M extension hose so it gives me a 10M hose to wander over the boat without having to move the washer at all.

I think it is highly irresponsible & selfish to use some of the chemicals mentioned here in a marine environment.I'm sorry if this is not a popular message but I think someone has to say it!

Do you have any scientific evidence to back that up for the specific cleaners mentioned here?

Well Patio cleaner was mentioned & on the back of the stuff I bought from ALDI's (highly recommended here) it says "very toxic to aquatic life" is that good enough for you Tranona?

On a personal note.I used some gelcote cleaner stuff I inherited with the boat on a bit of the hull I am working on the other day & later noticed a Cormorant behaving very oddly diving continually & shaking it's head etc.I was mortified that I may have caused it.I am acutely aware of the consequences I am having on the environment particularly the marine one that I love so much & is very vulnerable.Around here what has been done to it & the way it is treated as a whole is a complete & utter disgrace.

PS:Actually it's not just the marine one.Yesterday I went for a ride on my newly acquired fantastic mountain bike to a little wood I have discovered & everywhere you go you see discarded beer cans & rubbish left by kids etc. There are some very selfish people about!

A good point. I was just about to buy some Patio Magic and hadn't thought of the toxicity. I have ordered some organic stuff instead and will see how I get on with it.

As the person who mentioned Patio Magic I feel a response is warranted.

There is a very clear warning about not splashing it on to surrounding plants when applying it. Oh and don't get it in your eyes or drink it.

Then wash your hands.

NONE of the solution goes near the water. It soaks directly into the deck.

After that? I don't know*** but if it is as toxic as you fear once it has dried, there would be dead children and animals scattering the patios of the UK.

I DO hope that you have a portapotti, recycle your oily exhaust water and don't use antifoul.

You may be right though. I've not seen a seahorse since I applied the stuff.
